Natural Cell-Mediated Immunity Against Tumors aims to be the first book to provide a comprehensive discussion on natural cell-mediated immunity against tumors. This book is mostly a collection of different research contributed by leading laboratories. It also presents a better perspective of how natural mechanisms fit in with and relate to the traditional and more extensively studied components of the immune system. The book starts off with an overview of the contents of the volume – the historical development of the advances in the field of research and the status of knowledge in the subject area. Divided into four major sections, the book consists of a total of 98 chapters. The sections discuss the natural killer cells and related cells and the natural lymphokine production. This book also explains the natural macrophage and granulocyte cytotoxicity. The book will be a helpful reference for students, professionals, and researchers in biology, immunology, biochemistry, microbiology, and other related fields.

NK Cells and Other Natural Effector Cells reviews the state of knowledge on NK cells and other natural effector mechanisms. The coverage of immune effector systems ranges from basic studies on their nature, regulation, and mechanisms of action to important practical issues such as their role in host resistance, their modulation by therapeutic intervention, and alterations of their activity in disease. The book is organized into 12 parts. Parts I and II examine the characteristics of NK cells and other natural effector cells, respectively. Part III focuses on the cell lineage of NK and related effector cells, providing evidence for or against T cell lineage, for or against macrophage lineage, and for or against other or separate lineage. Part IV deals with the genetics of natural resistance in the mouse and rat. Part V presents studies on the regulation of cytotoxic activity. Part VI examines the specificity of natural effector cells, covering the nature of target cell structures and the nature of recognition receptors in effector cells. Part VII discusses the cytotoxicity by cultured lymphoid cells while Part VIII turns to the mechanisms of cytotoxicity. Part IX deals with natural cell-mediated reactivity against primary tumor cells and against non-tumor targets. Part X examines NK cell tumors or the presence of NK cells at the site of tumor growth. Part XI presents clinical studies with natural effector cells. Part XII provides evidence for in vivo reactivity of natural effector cells.

Natural and Induced Cell-Mediated Cytotoxicity: Effector and Regulatory Mechanisms contains the proceedings of the Erwin Riesch Symposium organized on the occasion of the Fifth Centennial of the University of Tübingen in Germany on October 20-23, 1977. The symposium provided a forum for reviewing the progress that has been made in understanding the effector and regulatory mechanisms underlying natural and induced cell-mediated cytotoxicity. Topics covered range from the immunobiology of natural killer cells to the role of macrophages as regulator, accessory, and effector cells in cytotoxicity. Comprised of 27 chapters, this book begins by analyzing the characteristics of natural cytotoxic cells in mice, followed by a discussion on the generation in vivo of mouse natural cytotoxic cells and the role of cytotoxic T cells in the local defense against solid tumors. Subsequent chapters focus on the natural cytotoxicity of human lymphocytes; opposing effects of interferon on natural killer and target cells; susceptibility of cloned melanoma to natural cytotoxicity; and cell-mediated immunity against avian virus-induced tumor cells. The book also examines alternative routes of entry for cell surface antigens into the immune system before concluding with a chapter that considers interferon induction by Corynebacterium parvum. This monograph should be of value to students, researchers, and practitioners in the fields of biology and immunology.

This volume is the second in the 'Cancer Treatment and Research' series focussing on basic and clinical tumor immunology. It has a rather different focus or emphasis from that of the first volume, published two years ago. That work (Basic and Clinical Tumor Immunology, R.B. Herberman, ed., Martinus Nijhoff Publishers, 1983) devoted considerable attention to up dated summaries in various areas of classical tumor immunology: specific antitumor immunity, the immunologic competence of cancer patietns, char acterization of human tumor-associated antigens, the ability to propagate specifically immune T cells in culture in the presence of interleukin 2, and the use of such cells for adoptive immunotherapy of established tumors. of evidence concerning the immune However, it also reviewed the status surveillance hypothesis and pointed out the need to consider non-T cell mediated mechanisms of host resistance. In particular, one chapter sum marized information on the role of macrophages in host resistance against tumors. The present volume continues to emphasize one of the major themes of the first volume, innovative approaches to the therapy of cancer. It involves contributions from leading investigators on several primary types of therapeutic interventions related to monoclonal antibodies, the col laboration of monoclonal antibodies with macro phages to mediate antibody dependent cellular cytotoxicity, lymphokines, tumor vaccines, and natural killer cells. It also has an up-to-date summary of the immunologic aspects of the exciting and promising work being performed on human T cell leukemia virus in the laboratory of Dr. Robert Gallo.

The rapid and continuous upsurge of interesting data in the subject of tumor immunology necessitates the publication of an annual series to furnish the updated materials to the students, researchers, and clinicians in this rapidly advancing field. Concepts and methodologies are ever changing. Also, current research in tumor immunology promises to offer breakthroughs in the future. Important is the need to communicate to the right people the exact role of immunodiagnostic methods and immunological intervention in cancer preven tion and treatment. The role of immunotherapy in combination with conven tional modalities of treatment needs to be understood in its proper perspective. Oncogene, interferon, lymphokines, monoclonal antibodies, natural killer cells, platelet-mediated cytotoxicity of antibody-coated target cells, suppressor cells, platelet-derived factors, plasma-blocking factors, control of suppressor cell func tion, abrogation of plasma-blocking factors, and so forth, are some of the areas that are continually advancing. Progress in these areas will have implication in cancer therapy. Further, it is already understood that if immunocompetence of the host can be maintained at a reasonably good level, there exists the potential to increase the therapeutic indexes of conventional modalities of treatment. This series will attempt to present updated information in all these areas based on con tributed and solicited articles.
