This SpringerBrief bridges the gap between the areas of simulation studies on the one hand, and optimization with natural computing on the other. Since natural computing methods have been applied with great success in several application areas, a review concerning potential benefits and pitfalls for simulation studies is merited. The brief presents such an overview and combines it with an introduction to natural computing and selected major approaches, as well as with a concise treatment of general simulation-based optimization. As such, it is the first review which covers both the methodological background and recent application cases. The brief is intended to serve two purposes: First, it can be used to gain more information concerning natural computing, its major dialects, and their usage for simulation studies. It also covers the areas of multi-objective optimization and neuroevolution. While the latter is only seldom mentioned in connection withsimulation studies, it is a powerful potential technique. Second, the reader is provided with an overview of several areas of simulation-based optimization which range from logistic problems to engineering tasks. Additionally, the brief focuses on the usage of surrogate and meta-models. The brief presents recent application examples.

This book discusses and compares several new trends that can be used to overcome Moore’s law limitations, including Neuromorphic, Approximate, Parallel, In Memory, and Quantum Computing. The author shows how these paradigms are used to enhance computing capability as developers face the practical and physical limitations of scaling, while the demand for computing power keeps increasing. The discussion includes a state-of-the-art overview and the essential details of each of these paradigms.

Hypercomputation written by Apostolos Syropoulos and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-12-10 with Computers categories.

Hypercomputation is a relatively new theory of computation that is about computing methods and devices that transcend the so-called Church-Turing thesis. This book will provide a thorough description of the field of hypercomputation covering all attempts at devising conceptual hypermachines and all new promising computational paradigms that may eventually lead to the construction of a hypermachine. Readers of this book will get a deeper understanding of what computability is and why the Church-Turing thesis poses an arbitrary limit to what can be actually computed. Hypercomputing is in and of itself quite a novel idea and as such the book will be interesting in its own right. The most important features of the book, however, will be the thorough description of the various attempts of hypercomputation: from trial-and-error machines to the exploration of the human mind, if we treat it as a computing device.

Beyond Calculation written by Peter J. Denning and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-09-25 with Computers categories.

In March 1997, the Association for Computing Machinery celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the electronic computer. Computers are everywhere: in our cars, our homes, our supermarkets, at the office, and at the local hospital. But as the contributors to this volume make clear, the scientific, social and economic impact of computers is only now beginning to be felt. These sixteen invited essays on the future of computing take on a dazzling variety of topics, with opinions from such experts as Gordon Bell, Sherry Turkle, Edsger W. Dijkstra, Paul Abraham, Donald Norman, Franz Alt, and David Gelernter. This brilliantly eclectic collection will fascinate everybody with an interest in computers and where they are leading us.

Neural Networks And Analog Computation written by Hava Siegelmann and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-12-01 with Computers categories.

The theoretical foundations of Neural Networks and Analog Computation conceptualize neural networks as a particular type of computer consisting of multiple assemblies of basic processors interconnected in an intricate structure. Examining these networks under various resource constraints reveals a continuum of computational devices, several of which coincide with well-known classical models. On a mathematical level, the treatment of neural computations enriches the theory of computation but also explicated the computational complexity associated with biological networks, adaptive engineering tools, and related models from the fields of control theory and nonlinear dynamics. The material in this book will be of interest to researchers in a variety of engineering and applied sciences disciplines. In addition, the work may provide the base of a graduate-level seminar in neural networks for computer science students.

This Festschrift volume has been published in honor of Cristian Calude on the occasion of his 60th birthday and contains contributions from invited speakers and regular papers presented at the International Workshop on Theoretical Computer Science, WTCS 2012, held in Auckland, New Zealand, in February 2012. Cristian Calude has made a significant contribution to research in computer science theory. Along with early work by Chaitin, Kučera, Kurtz, Solovay, and Terwijn his papers published in the mid-1990s jointly with Khoussainov, Hertling, and Wang laid the foundation for the development of modern theory of algorithmic randomness. His work was essential for establishing the leading role of New Zealand in this area. The research interests of Cristian Calude are reflected in the topics covered by the 32 papers included in this book, namely: algorithmic information theory, algorithms, automata and formal languages, computing and natural sciences, computability and applications, logic and applications, philosophy of computation, physics and computation, and unconventional models of computation. They have been organized into four parts. The first part consists of papers discussing his life achievements. This is followed by papers in the three general areas of complexity, computability, and randomness; physics, philosophy (and logic), and computation; and algorithms, automata, and formal models (including unconventional computing).

Beyond Artificial Intelligence written by Jozef Kelemen and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-20 with Computers categories.

Products of modern artificial intelligence (AI) have mostly been formed by the views, opinions and goals of the “insiders”, i.e. people usually with engineering background who are driven by the force that can be metaphorically described as the pursuit of the craft of Hephaestus. However, since the present-day technology allows for tighter and tighter mergence of the “natural” everyday human life with machines of immense complexity, the responsible reaction of the scientific community should be based on cautious reflection of what really lies beyond AI, i.e. on the frontiers where the tumultuous ever-growing and ever-changing cloud of AI touches the rest of the world. The chapters of this boo are based on the selected subset of the presentations that were delivered by their respective authors at the conference “Beyond AI: Interdisciplinary Aspects of Artificial Intelligence” held in Pilsen in December 2011. From its very definition, the reflection of the phenomena that lie beyond AI must be inherently interdisciplinary. And so is this book: all the authors took part in a mutual transdisciplinary dialogue after explaining their views on AI not only to a narrow selection of their usual close peers with the same specialisation, but to a much broader audience of various experts from AI engineering, natural sciences, humanities and philosophy. The chapters of this book thus reflect results of such a dialogue.
