Scheduling, planning and packing are ubiquitous problems that can be found in a wide range of real-world settings. These problems transpire in a large variety of forms, and have enormous socio-economic impact. For many years, significant work has been devoted to automating the processes of scheduling, planning and packing using different kinds of methods. However, poor scaling and the lack of flexibility of many of the conventional methods coupled with the fact that most of the real-world problems across the application areas of scheduling, planning and packing nowadays tend to be of large scale, dynamic and full of complex dependencies have made it necessary to tackle them in unconventional ways. This volume, "Natural Intelligence for Scheduling, Planning and Packing Problems", is a collection of numerous natural intelligence based approaches for solving various kinds of scheduling, planning and packing problems. It comprises 12 chapters which present many methods that draw inspiration from nature, such as evolutionary algorithms, neural-fuzzy system, particle swarm algorithms, ant colony optimisation, extremal optimisation, raindrop optimisation, and so on. Problems addressed by these chapters include freight transportation, job shop scheduling, flowshop scheduling, electrical load forecasting, vehicle routing, two-dimensional strip packing, network configuration and forest planning, among others. Along with solving these problems, the contributing authors present a lively discussion of the various aspects of the nature-inspired algorithms utilised, providing very useful and important new insights into the research areas.

Intelligent Systems For Knowledge Management written by Edward Szczerbicki and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-11-24 with Technology & Engineering categories.

New approaches are needed that could move us towards developing effective systems for problem solving and decision making, systems that can deal with complex and ill-structured situations, systems that can function in information rich environments, systems that can cope with imprecise information, systems that can rely on their knowledge and learn from experience - i.e. intelligent systems. One of the main efforts in intelligent systems development is focused on knowledge and information management which is regarded as the crucial issue in smart decision making support. The 13 Chapters of this book represent a sample of such effort. The overall aim of this book is to provide guidelines to develop tools for smart processing of knowledge and information. Still, the guide does not presume to give ultimate answers. Rather, it poses ideas and case studies to explore and the complexities and challenges of modern knowledge management issues. It also encourages its reader to become aware of the multifaceted interdisciplinary character of such issues. The premise of this book is that its reader will leave it with a heightened ability to think - in different ways - about developing, evaluating, and supporting intelligent knowledge and information management systems in real life based environment.

We describe in this book, new methods for evolutionary design of intelligent s- tems using soft computing and their applications in modeling, simulation and c- trol. Soft Computing (SC) consists of several intelligent computing paradigms, including fuzzy logic, neural networks, and evolutionary algorithms, which can be used to produce powerful hybrid intelligent systems. The book is organized in four main parts, which contain a group of papers around a similar subject. The first part consists of papers with the main theme of evolutionary design of fuzzy systems in intelligent control, which consists of papers that propose new methods for designing and optimizing intelligent controllers for different applications. The second part c- tains papers with the main theme of evolutionary design of intelligent systems for pattern recognition applications, which are basically papers using evolutionary al- rithms for optimizing modular neural networks with fuzzy systems for response - tegration, for achieving pattern recognition in different applications. The third part contains papers with the themes of models for learning and social simulation, which are papers that apply intelligent systems to the problems of designing learning - jects and social agents. The fourth part contains papers that deal with intelligent s- tems in robotics applications and hardware implementations. In the part of Intelligent Control there are 5 papers that describe different c- tributions on evolutionary optimization of fuzzy systems in intelligent control. The first paper, by Ricardo Martinez-Marroquin et al.

The College of Computing and Informatics (CCI) at UNC-Charlotte has three departments: Computer Science, Software and Information Systems, and Bioinformatics and Genomics. The Department of Computer Science offers study in a variety of specialized computing areas such as database design, knowledge systems, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, computer networks, game design, visualization, computer vision, and virtual reality. The Department of Software and Information Systems is primarily focused on the study of technologies and methodologies for information system architecture, design, implementation, integration, and management with particular emphasis on system security. The Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics focuses on the discovery, development and application of novel computational technologies to help solve important biological problems. This volume gives an overview of research done by CCI faculty in the area of Information & Intelligent Systems. Presented papers focus on recent advances in four major directions: Complex Systems, Knowledge Management, Knowledge Discovery, and Visualization. A major reason for producing this book was to demonstrate a new, important thrust in academic research where college-wide interdisciplinary efforts are brought to bear on large, general, and important problems. As shown in the research described here, these efforts need not be formally organized joint undertakings (through parts could be) but are rather a convergence of interests around grand themes.
