It is not the words themselves that provide the essential power of language; rather, it is the spaces between the words, as well as the order and combination of other words. At times, meaning may be found under the surface of the words themselves, in the intention and feeling that led to the formation of that specific combination of words. One of the most important skills for an empathic and emotionally intelligent listener or reader of natural language, whether it be human or computer, is the ability to comprehend the meaning that lies underneath the actual words.1. As is the case with concepts and thoughts, the creation of depth, information, and complexity is achieved via the links that exist between words. Once you have a firm grip on the meaning of individual words and a number of ingenious ways to tie them together, the next question is how you can dig underneath them and evaluate the meaning of a combination of words using something that is more flexible than counting the number of n-gram matches possible? How is it possible to extract meaning and emotion from a string of words, which is referred to as latent semantic information, so that you can use it for something? What's even more ambitious is the question of how to bestow that concealed meaning onto language that was produced by a calculating machine that is cold. Even just the term "machine-generated text" evokes a sense of fear since it conjures up images of a hollow, tinny voice releasing a broken list of words. The argument may be conveyed by machines, but they are not capable of much more than that. Where are we lacking? The manner in which a person communicates, the flow of their speech, and the personality that you anticipate from them in even the briefest of exchanges. The intricacies that are there may be found between the words, underneath the words, and in the patterns that are produced by the words themselves. When a person communicates, they will begin to establish patterns in both their voice and their written words. The really exceptional authors and public presenters will intentionally exploit these patterns, and they will do so to great advantage.
