During the past fifty years, thousands of natural products have been isolated from plants, fungi, and bacteria. Apart from intense searches by pharmaceutical companies for medicinals and the concentrated effort mounted by the National Cancer Institute, many of these have not been tested in biological systems. The major reasons for this appear to be, at least, twofold. First, individual researchers looking for biologically active natural products will often isolate only small amounts of material sufficient to determine a structure and calculate the specific activity for their particular bioassay systems: insufficient funds preclude re-isolating the compound unless industrial potential is foreseen. Second, the difficulty with which original structures were proved prior to 1972. This required the isolation of relatively large quantities of a natural product and there followed extensive degradation, elemental analyses of the parent and its fragments, then synthesis, piece by piece, of the molecule. All this took time and energy. No wonder that when the structure was proved the chemist was enervated. And coupled to this was the fact that many chemists were not trained to test their materials in biological systems. In contrast, today a natural product can be isolated, its mass and molecular formula determined and, if there is some serendipity, crystals may be obtained for single crystal x-ray analysis. If conditions are near perfect, it is possible to isolate and identify a novel compound in a month.

This book summarizes state-of-the-art antiviral drug design and discovery approaches starting from natural products to de novo design, and provides a timely update on recently approved antiviral drugs and compounds in advanced clinical development. Special attention is paid to viral infections with a high impact on the world population or highly relevant from the public health perspective (HIV, hepatitis C, influenza virus, etc.). In these chapters, limitations associated with adverse effects and emergence of drug resistance are discussed in detail. In addition to classical antiviral strategies, chapters will be dedicated to discuss the non-classical drug development strategies to block viral infection, for instance, allosteric inhibitors, covalent antiviral agents, or antiviral compounds targeting protein–protein interactions. Finally, current prospects for producing broad-spectrum antiviral inhibitors will be also addressed. The book is distinctive in providing the most recent update in the rapidly evolving field of antiviral therapeutics. Authoritative reviews are written by international scientists well known for their contributions in their topics of research, which makes this book suitable for researchers not only within the antiviral research community but also attractive to a broad audience in the drug discovery field. This book covers molecular structures and biochemical mechanisms mediating the antiviral effects, while discussing various ligand design strategies, which include traditional medicinal chemistry, computational chemistry, and chemical biology approaches. The book provides a comprehensive review of antiviral drug discovery and development approaches, particularly focusing on current innovations and future trends.

The classification antiviral includes anything that destroys viruses or inhibits their ability to grow and reproduce. Herbals approach viral infection from two directions. They stimulate the immune system to produce more immune cells aiding your body’s ability to fight the infection and they act in direct opposition to viruses by inhibiting their ability to grow and reproduce so they cannot survive. The first line of defense against viral infection is prevention . Disinfecting surfaces with known antiviral cleaners, maintaining good health through diet, rest, and exercise and minimizing exposure to infectious agents is far more effective than any treatment plan in the continued battle against viruses. Regardless of the preventative care you take, there are always times where treating an infection will be necessary. Traditionally, viral infection is fought by blending herbals that support the body’s own natural defenses with those that act to kill the virus. Using a combination that blends both actions helps to minimize the duration and severity of any infection. Many herbs and oils act as natural immunostimulant and antiviral agents. Some of these natural products work as well as or even better than the products sold in your local pharmacy. Some of the items in your local pharmacy are even created based on the chemical constituents of plants you might have growing in your own yard. This guide contains antiviral agents that act as both disinfectants for infected air and surfaces and disease fighting agents for the body. Both categories eliminate harmful viruses. It is important that you read the traditional uses and side effects of each plant and discuss any alternative treatment with a qualified herbalist or physician prior to choosing a natural product.

This timely publication describes the botanical sources and chemical features of antiviral compounds. It covers their mechanisms of action and evaluates their therapeutic potential. Included is a discussion of synthetic analogues where appropriate. The book states that antiviral compounds in so-called medicinal plants may constitute some of their "active ingredients." It explains that many are photosensitizers, their antiviral activity dependent upon or augmented by light of specific wavelengths. This book is of value to microbiologists, phytochemists, virologists, natural-product chemists, ethnobotanists, pharmacologists, medical and veterinary researchers, and others interested in the application of plant compounds to therapy of infectious diseases.

The review on antiviral anti-hepatitis A virus agents is warranted given the importance of hepatitis A virus (HAV) as a human pathogen. Novel antiviral drugs have been sourced from natural agents and developed into products for management of viral infections. The role of purified natural products in treatment and as adjunctives in the management of HAV infections is clearly plausible. Treatments against Hepatitis A virus infection is currently limited. In this chapter, the antiviral natural products against hepatitis-A virus (HAV), their sources as well as their treatment approach and their application have been discussed. The antiviral natural products could be sourced generally from plants, herbs and animals. These natural agents have been shown to demonstrate substantial antiviral activity against HAV and could target various stages of the viral life cycle, replication, assemblage, release, as well as targeting virus-host specific interactions.
