The urgent task of conserving our natural resources demands the work of many. A large majority of the U.S. population is affiliated with Christian denominations. At a time when the churches are becoming increasingly politically engaged, this community represents an important potential source of environmental activism. This book presents the concrete evidence that churches and faith organizations are reconnecting with conservation and working to save the natural world. On a national level, the National Council of Churches, which represents 45 million people in a wide range of Protestant, Anglican, and Orthodox faith groups, has instituted an Eco-Justice Program. The program sponsors such initiatives as "Churches for the Chesapeake," a consortium working to protect the resources of Chesapeake Bay. On the local level, individual churches like St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral in Seattle have integrated "creation care" into the core values of the congregation. Through interviews and field visits across the country, McDuff uses a framework of five bioregions in which to present the responses of churches to pressing environmental issues. She shows that the local congregation is the right vehicle for connecting social and environmental justice in a community. Despite the growth of this movement, she argues, most environmental professionals are unaware of the power of this partnership between Christians and conversation. This book is meant to help bring churches, faith organizations, and environmental activists together in the service of this vital cause.

Jesus told us to be perfect, and the Second Vatican Council highlighted this command by speaking of the universal call to holiness for all Christians. How do we answer this call? One great way is to learn from and pray with the saints, the ordinary men and women who fought the good fight to be holy until the end of their lives – and won. The saints have inspired Christians for more than two thousand years because they show us what it looks like to follow Jesus Christ despite countless challenges and obstacles. This unique book contains short biographies of several saints, along with prayers to each one, for every day of the year. It also provides definitions of Church terms and other helpful back - ground information. The saints in this collection come from every period of Church history and all walks of life. They represent numerous countries, cultures, age groups, and vocations. They show us that holiness truly is a path open to anyone, and by their example and prayers they help us to follow it.

MENTION of the Saints of the Catholic Church very frequently occurs both in general reading and as having given their names to churches, towns, villages and topographical features. The object of this compilation is to enable the personage referred to readily to be identified. Nothing more is attempted in this volume. Of a certain number of the Saints detailed Lives have been published in English. Of many more full accounts in other languages, particularly in French and Italian, are easily accessible. Again, there are several good and reliable Series of Lives of the more prominent Saints. The best known of these to English-speaking people is Alban Butler’s Lives of the Saints, an eighteenth century work which has been many times reprinted. In no language, however, does there exist any exhaustive work of the kind; nor in the nature of things can there be. Aeterna Press

Trithemius And Magical Theology written by Noel L. Brann and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-11-05 with Religion categories.

Through an examination of the Benedictine abbot Trithemius (1462–1516), this book explores the intersection of the early modern debate over occult studies with a number of contemporaneous developments: late medieval mysticism, the revival of ancient letters, the Catholic and Protestant reform movements, the witch hunts, and the scientific revolution. A Benedictine living to the threshold of the Reformation period, Trithemius excelled for most of his career in the fields of monastic reform, mystical theology, and Christian Humanism, and then, suddenly, announced himself to the world as an advocate of magic. In many ways paralleling the life of his more famous contemporary Faustus, Trithemius, in contrast, left to posterity a body of theoretical work in support of his magical operations. Formulated to justify his own specialty, cryptography, Trithemius's occult theory goes beyond establishing the compatibility of magic with orthodox Christian doctrine. Its basic thrust, on the model of mystical theology, is to present magic as an appropriate vehicle to convey the soul from the finite to the infinite.

Aspiring Saints written by Anne Jacobson Schutte and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-04-19 with History categories.

Between 1618 and 1750, sixteen people -- nine women and seven men -- were brought to the attention of the ecclesiastical authorities in Venice because they were reporting visions, revelations, and special privileges from heaven. All were investigated, and most were put on trial by the Holy Office of the Inquisition on a charge of heresy under various rubrics that might be translated as "pretense of holiness." Anne Jacobson Schutte looks closely at the institutional, cultural, and religious contexts that gave rise to the phenomenon of visionaries in Venice. To explain the worldview of the prosecutors as well as the prosecuted, Schutte examines inquisitorial trial dossiers, theological manuals, spiritual treatises, and medical works that shaped early modern Italians' understanding of the differences between orthodox Catholic belief and heresy. In particular, she demonstrates that socially constructed assumptions about males and females affected how the Inquisition treated the accused parties. The women charged with heresy were non-elites who generally claimed to experience ecstatic visions and receive messages; the men were usually clergy who responded to these women without claiming any supernatural experience themselves. Because they "should have known better," the men were judged more harshly by authorities. Placing the events in a context larger than just the inquisitorial process, Aspiring Saints sheds new light on the history of religion, the dynamics of gender relations, and the ambiguous boundary between sincerity and pretense in early modern Italy.
