Excerpt from Nature Study Lessons Seasonally Arranged Several considerations have determined the choice of matter in the following chapters. In the first place the objects described, whether whole plants or parts, are nearly all of good size, of clearly defined and typical structure, and, what is also of importance, easily obtainable. In the second place the material has a distinct relation to the seasons. The chapters follow the annual cycle of the months and, as each is independent of the others, a start may be made at any point and the circle completed from it onwards. The first chapter is of a general nature and may be regarded as introductory to, or as summarising, the rest of the book. It may be pointed out that the seasonal arrangement is not merely a matter of convenience. The cabbage is not merely set down for study in winter because it can be got then, or because little else is available, but chiefly because it is an expression in plant form of the cessation of active growth imposed by that season. In the same way the seedling bean suggests the return of vigorous life associated with spring: The fulness and colour of summer is seen in leafy plants (such as wallflower) with their showy flowers, while not less distinctly do the ripening fruits and showers of seed point to autumn as a time of results. Excerpt from Nature Study One Hundred Lessons About Plants Nature Study is new; Liebig was the first man who used a laboratory for instruction. He began his career as a teacher in 1824. Courses in mathematics and language have had centuries in which to perfect their methods of instruction and the lessons it is best to offer; for this reason, lessons in these subjects are good, if not the best, that can be offered, and the methods of giving them have had opportunity to eliminate errors. The teacher of nature study has almost no past to guide him. The older teach ers of nature study were not themselves taught in schools. As a department of instruction it is without traditions or precedents. Every serious teacher so far has had to pave his own road. All teachers have gone different roads. It could not be otherwise. The material with which nature study deals, is inexhaustible; no one can ever be acquainted with more than an insignificant frac tion of it. It is all good. It will always be the case that success ful teachers will give what they know. They will accordingly teach different things. It is probably true that every successful teacher has, from year to year, taken his pupils over different ground, and that everything done has proved to be good. What it is best to teach we cannot yet tell, in other words, than that that material is best which can be bad. This nature study work has passed through three phases. It was first taught from books. The only nature study work I ever did in school was in Geography and Physiology and every syllable of these came from books. We next added the laboratory. How new this phase of the subject is, may be learned from the presi dential address of Dr. Wiley before the Indiana Science Teachers' Association at Lafayette, in 1895. He says: Prior to 1863 no laboratory instruction was given in Indiana except a little in qualitative analysis. Excerpt from One Hundred Lessons in Nature Study: Around My School This little book is not intended to be in any sense a treatise on nature study. It does not pretend to be anything more than a collection of one hundred suggestive lessons on natural objects, such as have been given in the public school at Chatham, New Jersey, during the past two years. It will be observed that these lessons are not classified in any iron-clad order, nor are they arranged with any reference to scientific sequence. This apparent absence of classification is introduced for a purpose, i.e., it fulfils more truly the natural method of acquiring knowledge. The author has found during many years experience that when nature study is fitted into rigid rules as to what, when, how, etc., it becomes very soon little else than so many pages of some text-book in the teachers hands. In nature study there should be the utmost liberty of choice given to the teacher and pupil, one condition only being required, namely, that a certain definite period be given regularly to the study of some natural object ox phenomenon. Comenius said: "Knowledge of things near at hand should be acquired first, then that of those farther off." Taking this maxim as a keynote, the author has endeavored to present only such lessons as can be given in any school outside of large cities: Beginning (1) with things which can be studied in the school-house and grounds, selected by teacher and pupils; proceeding (2) to things farther away from the school. Excerpt from Nature-Study Lessons All the world is newer and stranger to the young child than America was to Christopher Columbus when he first set foot upon it. The child acquires knowledge by what he is told and later by what he reads, but the first knowledge, and, indeed, most of the knowledge he receives in his earliest years, is, and must be, acquired by the use of his own powers. A truth discovered by the child's own effort or experience is as useful as if learned by hearsay; but in many cases the mental power and disposition developed through the efforts put forth by the child in search of a truth are more useful to him than the truth itself. Hence, usually the child who acquires useful knowledge by means of his self-activity is more than twice blessed as compared with the one who gets the same knowledge secondhand. Natures Method of Teaching. - Think how much a child learns by this natural method before he is old enough to go to school. In the school-room, the very place devoted to learning, should wise Natures favorite method of teaching be neglected or forgotten? This misfortune has happened when the child has formed the habit of depending almost entirely on the teacher or on the book to tell him what he does not know. He is not unlike a jug set before a fountain to be filled. He feels that his memory bears the chief responsibility for his education; he loses the disposition, if not the power, to find out things by his own efforts. Cramming not Education. - Observe an intelligent farmer feeding his stock. How differently he treats the animal which he wishes to fatten from the one he wishes to make strong. The former is kept quiet and is plentifully supplied with luscious grass or chopped food, but the latter is given exercise and training as well as a different kind of food. Excerpt from First Lessons in Nature Study Some of it comes from beet plants. The pretty, red, tender beets we eat at the table have sugar in them, as we can tell by the sweet taste. But these red beets are not the kind that people grow for sugar. Sugar beets are larger and they have pale roots.
