A beautifully illustrated, concise critical analysis of the art, careers, and reception of the husband-wife team of artists known as Les Lalanne François-Xavier (1927-2008) and Claude (1925-2019) Lalanne were a husband-wife team of artists who created inventive and often surprising works that have been widely admired and collected since the 1960s. This book presents a carefully selected group of sculptures that focus on a shared preoccupation of the artists: the transformation of natural forms to serve new purposes, such as François-Xavier's giant grasshopper sculpture that opens into a bar and Claude's bench made of galvanized metal branches and vines such that it remains as much a forest as a place to sit. Critical analysis explores the full breadth of the artists' careers; considers the complex issues of reception and categorization of their work; and prompts a reevaluation of the place their art occupies in the context of art museums, all while encouraging readers to consider relationships among nature, art, and their own encounters with both. Distributed for the Clark Art Institute Exhibition Schedule: Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, MA (May 8-October 31, 2021)

When a group of liberal arts students embark on a university assignment about the natural environment, no one could have quite prepared them for the bewildering array of questions and provocations to confront them in their task. What starts out as an earnest attempt to understand nature in the modern world, turns into a philosophical and practical tangle that only a good transdisciplinary education can provide. Can anyone save the day and actually start to value ‘nature’? And if they can’t, then what’s stopping them? The idea of ‘valuing nature’ harmonises diverse areas of natural resource management and is an important dimension of scientific and practical work concerned with managing ecosystems and habitats for sustainability. This graphic book takes the reader on an exploration of the issues that arise from this growing interest and concern in the valuation of nature. Set around the premise of a ‘motley’ group of undergraduates endeavouring to complete a university assignment on ‘nature in the modern world’, the book explores: the many and diverse meanings people assign to nature the different ways the relationship between people and nature might be characterised the many values systems people hold for the natural world the options and approaches society can deploy to manage it the extent to which we need entirely new economic systems to protect and sustain nature. This highly interdisciplinary book invites consideration of a range of philosophical and applied debates and questions. Written in an accessible style, it is an ideal undergraduate text in the fields of ecology, human and physical geography, conservation science, environment, social science and spatial planning, as well as a general primer for graduate natural and social scientists embarking on interdisciplinary research in the natural resource management arena.

Nature S Mutiny written by Philipp Blom and has been published by Pan Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-07 with History categories.

Europe where the sun dares scarce appear For freezing meteors and congealed cold.' - Christopher Marlowe In this innovative and compelling work of environmental history, Philipp Blom chronicles the great climate crisis of the 1600s, a crisis that would transform the entire social and political fabric of Europe. While hints of a crisis appeared as early as the 1570s, by the end of the sixteenth century the temperature plummeted so drastically that Mediterranean harbours were covered with ice, birds literally dropped out of the sky, and ‘frost fairs’ were erected on a frozen Thames – with kiosks, taverns, and even brothels that become a semi-permanent part of the city. Recounting the deep legacy and sweeping consequences of this ‘Little Ice Age’, acclaimed historian Philipp Blom reveals how the European landscape had ineradicably changed by the mid-seventeenth century. While apocalyptic weather patterns destroyed entire harvests and incited mass migrations, Blom brilliantly shows how they also gave rise to the growth of European cities, the appearance of early capitalism, and the vigorous stirrings of the Enlightenment. A sweeping examination of how a society responds to profound and unexpected change, Nature’s Mutiny will transform the way we think about climate change in the twenty-first century and beyond.

Re Aligning With Nature written by Denise Kelly DeLuca and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with BUSINESS & ECONOMICS categories.

Denise DeLuca's Re-Aligning with Nature takes readers who are looking for radical social and business solutions on a direct and simple path to real change: nature's path. In this clear, direct, illustration-driven book, DeLuca lays out the core issues of why we are in danger due to being out of alignment with nature and how realigning with nature can save the planet. Long ago, humans lived in alignment with nature. As we discovered how to exploit nature's resources, as well as human resources, life became easier and more comfortable (especially for the few), but we became detached from nature and our own human spirit. We are now realizing that ecosystems are being destroyed, species are going extinct, and the Earth is heating up. But giant companies, governments, and other organizations are sluggish and can't respond to change fast enough. In addition to realigning what we make and how we make things with nature, we need to realign ourselves with nature and our own human nature. We need to recognize and recapture our natural paradigm. Radical? Absolutely. Hard? It's much easier than you'd think. Welcome to the 'real' world!

A Generous Nature written by Marcy Cottrell Houle and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with Conservationists categories.

"A Generous Nature: Lives Transformed by Oregon offers profiles of twenty-one conservationists and activists who have made enduring contributions to the preservation of Oregon's wild and natural places and its high quality of life. These stories speak to their courage, foresight, and actions-at times against great odds-to save places, enact legislation, and motivate others to cherish and protect the places that make Oregon unique. Taken from personal interviews conducted by the author over a decade, these stories will help readers understand the histories of Oregon's exceptional places, innovative planning efforts, and laws. They provide insight into the principles and values that motivated individuals to preserve the beauty and natural resources of Oregon, craft legislation to further protect them, and educate others about their value. Places as diverse as the Columbia River Gorge Natural Scenic Area, the wild and scenic Sandy River, and Tryon Creek State Park are featured, along with background on critical laws such as the Beach Bill, Diack Act, and Senate Bill 100, and organizations such as SOLVE and the High Desert Partnership. A Generous Nature is a testament to the vision and hard work of people who loved Oregon and fought to protect its ecosystems and habitats for the benefit of all. These stories do more than educate. They will inspire readers and demonstrate that individually we can make a difference. They underscore that the natural wonders of our state should be guarded and not taken for granted. In these times of unsettled political polarization and divisiveness, A Generous Nature is a crucial reminder of our individual and collective responsibility to stand for and defend the places, ideals, and laws that make Oregon a progressive model for the rest of the nation"--
