TRB Special Report 266: Naval Engineering: Alternative Approaches for Organizing Cooperative Research evaluates alternative approaches for organizing and managing cooperative research programs in naval engineering. At the request of the Office of Naval Research (ONR), TRB/the Marine Board convened a committee to investigate and evaluate alternative approaches for structuring cooperative research programs in naval engineering. ONR is concerned about having both research products in "total ship design" and designers who are capable of designing complex warships according to this approach. In a fast-track study, the committee evaluated four approaches to structuring a cooperative research program and provided its assessment of these options. Each model was assessed in terms of its ability to balance the perspective of the various stakeholders (Navy, shipbuilding industry, and universities) in the development of a research agenda, the production of useful research, and the ability to attract students into the field.Special Report 266 Summary

TRB Special Report 306: Naval Engineering in the 21st Century: The Science and Technology Foundation for Future Naval Fleets examines the state of basic and applied research in the scientific fields that support naval engineering and explores whether Office of Naval Research (ONR) activities, under its National Naval Responsibility for Naval Engineering (NNR-NE) initiative, have been effective in sustaining these fields. The committee developed a series of conclusions and recommendations in five areas--the value of the NNR-NE, the state of science and technology supporting naval engineering, the wholeness of the NNR-NE research portfolio, opportunities for enhancement of research and education, and the effectiveness of the NNR-NE initiative. The report's recommendations are addressed to the administrators of the NNR-NE initiative and of ONR.

Naval Engineering explores the intertwined history of ship design and military strategy, revealing how naval architecture has shaped maritime history. It examines core principles like hydrostatics and hydrodynamics, crucial for understanding ship stability and movement. Readers will discover how social and military pressures drove innovation, from sail to nuclear power, influencing naval technology across centuries. The book progresses systematically, first covering hull design and the science of ship stability. It then explores propulsion systems, comparing the efficiency of sail, steam, diesel, and nuclear power. Finally, it integrates these systems within naval operations, discussing survivability and the impact of technology on military strategy. Supported by historical records and technical data, this book offers a unique perspective on naval technology's role in military and civilian maritime advancements.

Fundamentals of shipboard machinery, equipment, and engineering plants are presented in this text prepared for engineering officers. A general description is included of the development of naval ships, ship design and construction, stability and buoyancy, and damage and casualty control. Engineering theories are explained on the background of ship propulsion and steering, lubrication systems, measuring devices, thermodynamics, and energy exchanges. Conventional steam turbine propulsion plants are presented in such units as machinery arrangement, plant layout, piping systems, propulsion boilers and their fittings and controls, steam turbines, and heat transfer apparatus in condensate and feed systems. General principles of diesel, gasoline, and gas turbine engines are also provided. Moreover, nuclear power plants are analyzed in terms of the fission process, reactor control, and naval nuclear power plant. Auxiliary equipment is also described. The text is concluded by a survey of newly developed hull forms, propulsion and steering devices, direct energy conversion systems, combined power plants, central operations systems, and fuel conversion programs. Illustrations for explanation purposes are also given.
