The work of considering, imagining, and theorizing the U.S. South in regional, national, and global contexts is an intellectual project that has been going on for some time. Scholars in history, literature, and other disciplines have developed an advanced understanding of the historical, social, and cultural forces that have helped to shape the U.S. South. However, most of the debates on these subjects have taken place within specific academic disciplines, with few attempts to cross-engage. Navigating Souths broadens these exchanges by facilitating transdisciplinary conversations about southern studies scholarship. The fourteen original essays in Navigating Souths articulate questions about the significances of the South as a theoretical and literal “home” base for social science and humanities researchers. They also examine challenges faced by researchers who identify as southern studies scholars, as well as by those who live and work in the regional South, and show how researchers have responded to these challenges. In doing so, this book project seeks to reframe the field of southern studies as it is currently being practiced by social science and humanities scholars and thus reshape historical and cultural conceptualizations of the region.

Great Times Down South examines advertising materials from 1976 to 1981, including brochures, booklets, advertisements, and radio and TV spots, used by state tourism bureaus in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and South Carolina. The chosen period, known as the Carter era, marked "southern fashion" and economic prosperity in the Sunbelt. Analyzing the strategies, rhetoric, images, and themes employed by these tourism bureaus domestically and internationally offers a unique look into the prevailing conception of the South as marketed and perceived externally. A noticeable shift in the tourist image of the South occurred in the late 1970s, aligning with significant changes in southern culture and society. While the 1970s are acknowledged for altering the perception and symbolic role of the South in American culture, little research explores how these changes influenced the region's promotional image. Prevailing views extend the classic Old South imagery into the 1970s, but Giuliano Santangeli Valenzani contends that the roots of the current, elusive image of the South can be precisely traced in advertising materials designed to attract visitors during the 1970s.

The South China Sea (SCS) has emerged as a theatre of political, economic, and security concerns not only for the countries in the region but also for the world at large. Contrary to conventional wisdom, the SCS issue is not about contestation over territory or control over resources alone. With military facilities including airstrips and artificial islands or structures being built in the area, concerns about freedom of navigation and the right to innocent passage have also become an overwhelming security issue and made the SCS region a flashpoint which, according to many assessments, can lead to confrontations including those involving conventional military means. Disruption of maritime passage could also hamper trade and commerce with very negative impacts on the economic development of the region and other countries. It is now being held that China could also be using the SCS disputes as part of a consorted effort to deflect geo-political pressures on account of the COVID-19 pandemic-related cover-ups and misinformation.This book explores the historical and strategic context of the South China Sea disputes and makes an assessment of the implications of the same for freedom of navigation and other regimes at sea.
