It is 1960, and for a boy of 16, it was the beginning of the most exciting and challenging decade of his life. World events were being threatened by nuclear war with Russia. In November the youngest ever President was elected promising a better, brighter future for everyone. Unfortunately, Khrushchev and Castro weren't on-board with Kennedy's plans and we were heading for a showdown over Berlin and our failed Bay of Pigs attempt to overthrow Castro. For Eddie, the thought of military service became more exciting than school and hanging around the neighborhood. Planning to join the Marines, Eddie and his friends are disappointed when the recruiter is out to lunch. While waiting in the Navy recruiter's office, they are soon destined to join the Navy. As it turns out, Eddie is the only one to go. NAVYDAYS: Memoirs of a Sailor in the 60's, is the true adventure of naval service as a Radioman aboard two aircraft carriers - the USS Saratoga and the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. Serve with Eddie and his shipmates during the perilous times of the Cuban Missile crisis and live the experiences of liberty in the Caribbean and Mediterranean seas. Guaranteed to make you feel you were there for an interesting and adventurous 4 years.

Hms Ganges Days written by Peter Broadbent and has been published by Andrews UK Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06-08 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

When Peter Broadbent entered HMS Ganges, the toughest training establishment for young recruits to the Royal Navy, he was a naive 15-year-old Yorkshire schoolboy, entranced with the idea of seeing the world, proud of his drainpipe trousers and DA hairstyle, and eager to meet girls. In other words, he was a ‘Nozzer' - a raw and unsuspecting recruit. When he emerged 386 days later it was as a prospective ‘Dabtoe', not quite a fully trained Seaman, but well on the way. This funny and vivid memoir accurately captures what it was like to climb the mast, have your kit trashed, learn to swear, develop a taste for Kye and Stickies, double around the parade-ground at dead of night in your pyjamas, endlessly run up and down Laundry Hill ... and to do it all and much more while being continually barracked by a demanding Petty Officer Instructor. Along the way, Peter relished learning the Navy lingo and how to sail. He consumed platefuls of Cheese Ush, won a boxing certificate, discovered a secret stash of Playboy magazines, smoked thousands of cigarettes, and convinced girls back home that his shorn hair was in fact the very latest fashion ‘down south’.

British Destroyers written by Norman Friedman and has been published by Pen and Sword this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-08-30 with History categories.

A history of the early days of Royal Navy destroyers, and how they evolved to meet new military threats. In the late nineteenth century the advent of the modern torpedo woke the Royal Navy to a potent threat to its domination, not seriously challenged since Trafalgar. For the first time a relatively cheap weapon had the potential to sink the largest, and costliest, exponents of sea power. Not surprisingly, Britain’s traditional rivals invested heavily in the new technology that promised to overthrow the naval status quo. The Royal Navy was also quick to adopt the new weapon, but the British concentrated on developing counters to the essentially offensive tactics associated with torpedo-carrying small craft. From these efforts came torpedo catchers, torpedo-gunboats and eventually the torpedo-boat destroyer, a type so successful that it eclipsed and then usurped the torpedo-boat itself. With its title shortened to destroyer, the type evolved rapidly and was soon in service in many navies, but in none was the evolution as rapid or as radical as in the Royal Navy. This book is the first detailed study of their early days, combining technical history with an appreciation of the changing role of destroyers and the tactics of their deployment. Like all of Norman Friedman’s books, it reveals the rationale and not just the process of important technological developments.
