Evaluation And Design Of Odot S Type 5 Guardrail With Tubular Backup written by Chuck A. Plaxico and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Roads categories.
The purpose of this project was to assess the performance of both the ODOT GR-2.2 guardrail and the ODOT GR-3.4 transition system under NCHRP Report 350 test level 3 (TL-3) conditions, propose any modifications that would improve their crashworthiness and, ultimately ensure that the final designs qualify for use on the National Highway System (NHS) as TL-3 systems. Finite element analyses of the guardrail and transition system were performed using the LS-DYNA finite element software to simulate NCHRP Report 350 Test 3-10 and Test 3-11 impact scenarios. The analysis results indicated that the original ODOT GR-2.2 guardrail would successfully meet all NCHRP Report 350 test level 3 safety criteria. The analyses also indicated that the performance of the system could be significantly improved with simple modifications to the guardrail. The integrated system of the Nested Type 5 Guardrail with Tubular Backup and the ODOT GR-3.4 transition was considered the most practical and feasible design improvement and was therefore recommended as a final design.

Two crash tests are required to evaluate portable concrete barriers, such as Washington Department of transportation (WsDOT) Type 2 concrete barriers, to NCHRP Report 350 test level three (TL-3). NCHRP Report 350 test designation 3-10 involves an 820 kg passenger vehicle impacting the critical impact point (CIP) of the length of need (LON) section at a nominal speed and angle of 100 km/h and 20 degrees. NCHRP Report 350 test designation 3-11 involves a 2000 kg pickup truck impacting the CIP of the LON section at a nominal speed and angle of 100 km/h and 25 degrees. Finite element analysis using LS-DYNA was used to simulate NCHRP Report 350 test designation 3-11 with the 2000 kg pickup truck on the standard Type 2 concrete barrier with a pin and loop connection and two modified pin and loop connections. In subsequent full-scale crash tests, both the standard and a modified concrete barrier met the evaluation criteria of NCHRP Report 350 for Test 3-11. For each of the two pin and loop configurations crash tested, the Washington Type 2 concrete barrier met the evaluation criteria of NCHRP Report 350 for test 3-11.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently adopted new performance evaluation guidelines for roadside safety features set forth in NCHRP Report 350. This report contains the results of a crash test performed on the 1.07-m vertical wall bridge railing with a 36000V test vehicle under NCHRP Report 350 test level 5 conditions, i.e., impacting the length of need at a nominal speed and angle of 80 km/h and 15 degrees. The purpose of the test was to determine if the bridge railing would perform satisfactorily in containing and redirecting the heavy vehicle without rolling the vehicle.
