C’est durant l’été 1960 que Nelle Harper Lee publie son premier roman, Ne tirez pas sur l’oiseau moqueur. Elle ne le sait pas encore, mais ce qui a longtemps été sa seule et unique œuvre marquera profondément plusieurs générations de lecteurs. Dans ce roman, l’auteure nous plonge, dans la ville fictive de Maycomb où Scout, une jeune fille, fait l’apprentissage des inégalités sociétales, alors que son père, un avocat, a choisi de défendre la cause d’un Noir accusé injustement du viol d’une jeune fille. S’étant vendu à plus de 60 millions d’exemplaires, le roman est aujourd’hui considéré comme l’un des plus grands classiques de la littérature américaine. Après avoir brièvement présenté la vie de Nelle Harper Lee, Marianne Lesage nous offre un résumé complet de l’intrigue du roman. Avant d’étudier en profondeur la psychologie des personnages, elle présente le contexte de l’œuvre. Elle évoque ainsi le fantôme de la Grande Dépression, encore très présent durant les sixties, et la lutte menée pour les droits civiques des Noirs. Elle s’intéresse ensuite aux grandes thématiques qui sous-tendent le roman : la fresque communautaire représentée par la société de Maycomb, les différents visages de la peur, l’altérité, la fin de l’innocence, etc. Avant de conclure avec l’incroyable succès remporté par le roman, elle étudie le style de l’auteur et la manière dont elle a su donner la parole à l’enfance, tout en permettant à l’adulte de porter un regard assez ironique sur les événements dont il est question.
