A collection of mostly published, some unpublished, articles written by famed aviatior Bill Kershner during his more than fifty years of flying. In these stories, Kershner details some of the more humorous, humiliating and helpful things he has seen and readers are sure to find them amusing and entertaining. Those who are pilots themselves may find some incidents all too familiar. Mostly chronological, these stories begin with Kershner's first flying experiences, through his career as a Navy fight pilot and then on to the later years as a corporate pilot and instructor. From the time of his childhood, Kershner has enjoyed drawing airplanes and the illustrations in this book reflect his sense of humor.

In my 2004 book, Turbulent Skies, I wrote, “Maybe someday someone will write about the incredible actions of the flight crews on the morning of September 11, 2001.” This wish began to manifest in the 10th year after 9/11 when I had an overwhelming sensation that I should undertake this quest myself. In my first year of writing, as I researched and wrote, my body would chill, and I would cry. Once an article was finished, I could hardly get up out of my chair. I truly felt like I was on the planes with the crews. I knew if I was to continue, I had to control all that emotion. The book’s focus initially was on the flight crews. But as I wrote, it became so much more. The reader will learn how the air traffic controllers cleared the skies, how Canada responded by handling all the incoming international flights, and how the failures of the FAA, the FBI, the CIA, and the airlines allowed this attack to take place. I realized that September 11th could have been even more disastrous had it not been for the actions of those brave crew members and little miracles that occurred that day. I also realized how it might have been prevented if the crews had been properly trained and informed about the threat they were facing. The book further examines how political forces changed the priorities for counter terrorism, and also impeded the examination of how the attacks could happen. These political forces were challenged by four New Jersey widows who got the 9/11 hearings approved. Finally, this book examines the aftermath of the attack, and how it forever changed the airline profession and added significant restrictions on traveling public.

How did Hawaiian and Polynesian culture come to dramatically alter American music, fashion and decor, as well as ideas about race, in less than a century? It began with mainland hula and musical performances in the late 19th century, rose dramatically as millions shipped to Hawaii during the Pacific War, then made big leap with the advent of low-cost air travel. By the end of the 1950s, mainlanders were hosting tiki parties, listening to exotic music, lazing on rattan furniture in Hawaiian shirts and, of course, surfing. Increasingly, they were marrying people outside of their own racial groups as well. The author describes how this cultural conquest came about and the people and events that led to it.

Upheaval. Flight. Terror. Insecurity. Milan Voticky and his family faced all of this when the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939 forced them to escape to Shanghai. Liberated from the Shanghai ghetto in 1945, the Voticky family made their way back to Prague, only to find themselves fleeing Czechoslovakia once again — this time from the Communists. When they finally found permanent refuge as in Canada, Milan swore that would refuse to see himself as a victim. He would seize every possible opportunity. In this, he finds common cause with the Dreamers, the 1,800,000 undocumented children of illegal immigrants in the USA who are covered by DACA. “As a two-time refugee from oppression and death,” Voticky writes, “I can understand the Dreamers’ fear of being sent to a country and culture that they don’t know or understand, where the language is one they do not speak, where they have no family or friends.” In addition to being the remarkable story of a remarkable man, Dreamers Refuse to Be Victims is a call to all those fleeing injustice to take charge of their own futures.

Emergency is a collection of true stories about events where disaster seems imminent. Yet each situation is concluded without loss of life thanks to the skill of the pilots and their crews, whose bravery and resourcefulness have earned them well-deserved commendations. Written by a British Airways First Officer, Stanley Stewart, who has spoken at first hand with the pilots and crews involved in all the incidents recorded here, the book offers a unique insight into what really happened: not the passengers eye-view, which in many cases is already documented, but the view from the flight deck of the aircraft itself.

"A compelling slice of mid-century espionage that expertly blends history with possibility. All comparisons that will inevitably be made with le Carré are entirely apt" Tim Glister 'Edward Wilson seems poised to inherit the mantle of John le Carré' Irish Independent 1949: William Catesby returns to London in disgrace, accused of murdering a 'double-dipper' the Americans believed to be one of their own. His left-wing sympathies have him singled out as a traitor. Henry Bone throws him a lifeline, sending him to Marseille, ostensibly to report on dockers' strikes and keep tabs on the errant wife of a British diplomat. But there's a catch. For his cover story, he's demobbed from the service and tricked out as a writer researching a book on the Resistance. In Marseille, Catesby is caught in a deadly vice between the CIA and the mafia, who are colluding to fuel the war in Indochina. Swept eastwards to Laos himself, he remains uncertain of the true purpose behind his mission, though he has his suspicions: Bone has murder on his mind, and the target is a former comrade from Catesby's SOE days. The question is, which one.
