Het eerste echte overzichtswerk over de Nederlandse cultuur tijdens het interbellum In dit boek analyseert Frits Boterman het culturele leven in Nederland tijdens het interbellum. De huidige turbulente tijd roept steeds meer vergelijkingen op met de onzekere jaren twintig en dertig, die in Europa werden getekend door de nasleep van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, de economische crisis en de opkomst van het fascisme. Hoewel de vergelijking deels terecht is, had het interbellum een heel eigen dynamiek en karakter. Botermans hoofdthese is dat de ‘oercatastrofe’ van de Eerste Wereldoorlog ook in Nederland voor een crisis der zekerheden heeft gezorgd. The first book to offer a complete story of the extraordinary proliferation of Dutch clandestine literature under the Nazi occupation. Clandestine literature was published in all countries under Nazi occupation, but nowhere else did it flourish as it did in the Netherlands. This raises important questions: What was the content of this literature? What were the risks of writing, printing, selling, and buying it? And why the Netherlands? Traditionally, the combative Dutch "spirit of resistance" has been cited, a reaction not only to German oppression but to German propaganda: while the Germans hoped to build bonds with their "Germanic" Dutch "brothers," clandestine literature insisted on their incompatibility. However, when reading clandestine literature, one should not forget that this "spirit of resistance" came rather late and did not prevent the transportation of seventy-three percent of the Netherlands' Jewish population to Nazi death camps -- the largest percentage in Western Europe. The Dutch case is complex: while the country proved to be remarkably resistant to Nazi propaganda, little was done to prevent the actual execution of Nazi policies. The complete story of Dutch clandestine literature therefore combines resistance and complicity, victory and defeat, pride and shame. Avant-Garde and Criticism sheds new light on the complex aims, functions, practices and contexts of art-criticism in relation to the European avant-garde. Although many avant-garde works and the avant-gardes of various countries have been analyzed, considerably less attention has been given to the reviews in newspapers and journals on avant-garde literature, art, architecture and film. This volume of Avant-Garde Critical Studies will look at how art critics operated in a strategic way. The strategies of avant-garde criticism are diverse. Art critics, especially when they are artists themselves, attempt to manipulate the cultural climate in their favour. They use their position to legitimize avant-garde concepts and to conquer a place in the cultural field. But they are also markedly influenced by the context in which they operate. The position of fellow-critics and the ideological bias of the papers in which they publish can be as important as the political climate in which their criticism flourishes. The analysis of avant-garde art criticism can also make clear how strategies sometimes fail and involuntarily display non-avant-garde characteristics. On the other hand traditionalist criticism on the avant-garde offers new insights into its status and reception in a given time and place. Overal in Europa signaleerden intellectuelen na de Eerste Wereldoorlog een diepgaande beschavingscrisis en droomden van een culturele regeneratie. In Nederland speelde de non-conformistische, cultuurkritische 'humanitaire beweging' een voortrekkersrol bij deze Europese culturele heroriëntatie. De aanhangers van deze beweging - religieus-socialisten en religieus-anarchisten, Dostojevski-vereerders, levensfilosofiebeoefenaars, neohegelianen en talrijke andere anti-rationalistische wereldverbeteraars en religieuze zoekers - gingen te rade bij schrijvers en filosofen als Oswald Spengler, Julien Benda, Romain Rolland en Thomas Mann. In de jaren dertig bekoelde de hooggestemde vernieuwingsdrang sterk vanwege de opmars van het fascisme en nazisme. Deze confronteerde de Nederlandse 'humanitair-idealisten' met de weerloosheid van hun geestelijk-religieuze, humanistische idealen en met de schaduwzijde van het eigen utopische verlangen naar een regeneratie van de Europese cultuur. Deze studie schenkt zowel aandacht aan de wisselwerking tussen cultuurkritiek en politiek, als aan de grensoverschrijdende contacten van de humanitair-idealisten en hun blauwdrukken voor een 'nieuwe cultuur'.

Duitstalige literatuur na 1945 is een tweedelig Nederlandstalig overzichtswerk waarin de belangrijkste tendensen en auteurs uit de naoorlogse Duitstalige literatuur in korte essays worden voorgesteld. Zonder encyclopedische volledigheid na te streven, schetsen de verschillende bijdragen telkens een globaal, maar ook genuanceerd beeld van het oeuvre van een auteur, van een literaire generatie of een opvallend literair fenomeen. Elke bijdrage wordt afgesloten met een selectieve bibliografie. Er werd gekozen voor overzichtelijke chronologische en geografische criteria. Dit eerste deel richt de schijnwerper op de "Duitse" literatuur tussen de symbolische jaartallen 1945 en 1989. In de literatuur van het in twee staten gesplitste Duitsland domineren politiek-maatschappelijke thema's. Tegelijk vertonen de verschillende literaire teksten uit deze periode zowel in Oost als West een grote taalgevoeligheid. Auteurs zoals Gnter Grass, Heiner Mller of Hans Magnus Enzensberger zijn representatief voor de mate waarin het gigantische trauma van het nationaal-socialisme en de Holocaust, maar ook de strijd tegen het socialistische realisme dat in de DDR aan kunstenaars werd opgelegd, leidde tot (vaak) extreme taalkritiek en een zoektocht naar andere, nieuwe vormen van spreken en schrijven. De legendarische Gruppe 47 - het laboratorium voor deze nieuwe dialoog van esthetiek en politiek - nam daarin het voortouw en werd zo in zekere zin de bakermat van een groot deel van de naoorlogse generatie Duitstalige auteurs.
