Protestant nuns and mixed-confessional convents are an unexpected anomaly in early modern Germany. According to sixteenth-century evangelical reformers' theological positions outlined in their publications and reform-minded rulers' institutional efforts, monastic life in Protestant regions should have ended by the mid-sixteenth century. Instead, many convent congregations exhibiting elements of traditional and evangelical practices in Protestant regions survived into the seventeenth century and beyond. How did these convents survive? What is a Protestant nun? How many convent congregations came to house nuns with diverse belief systems and devotional practices, and how did they live and worship together? These questions lead to surprising answers. Stripping the Veil explores the daily existence, ritual practices, and individual actions of nuns in surviving convents over time against the backdrop of changing political and confessional circumstances in Protestant regions. It also demonstrates how incremental shifts in practice and belief led to the emergence of a complex, often locally constructed, devotional life. This continued presence of nuns and the survival of convents in Protestant cities and territories of the German-speaking parts of the Holy Roman Empire is evidence of a more complex lived experience of religious reform, devotional practice, and confessional accommodation than traditional histories of early modern Christianity would indicate. The internal differences and the emerging confessional hybridity, blending, and fluidity also serve as a caution about designating a nun or groups of nuns as Lutheran, Catholic, or Reformed, or even more broadly as Protestant or Catholic during the sixteenth century.

In doing so, primarily in Wittenberg, during the 1970s and 1980s it gave protection to the Wittenberg Luther House from ideological infiltration. In the same, it offered a chance for mutual exchange of Luther research between East and West respecting both, Church and theology. During the Reformation decade from 2008 to 2017 and later on, it pursued the plan to explore the European reception of Reformation stimuli radiating from Wittenberg, which would unfold specific effects under different historical circumstances at different places. After the introduction of a church order, urban Reformation is usually considered to be completed. Using the example of the autonomous territorial city of Brunswick, Malte de Vries demonstrates, that the "Reformation" was followed by decades of consolidation – the "Implementation". In order to show this post-Reformation process, a variety of different aspects will be examined: The role of the magistrate and the church institutions aswell as the handling of marriages, the education- or the welfare system. By doing that, the study points out, that the ideal state, demanded in the lutheran church orders, required decades until it was actually realised.

Als im März 1528 der "Unterricht der Visitatoren" in Wittenberg erschien, lag damit ein Handbuch zur Einführung der Reformation vor. Alle Leser konnten sich nun informieren, wie in Kursachsen eine Reformation der Kirche angestrebt wurde. Kurfürst Johann von Sachsen sorgte dafür, dass Philipp Melanchthon gemeinsam mit Verwaltungsjuristen diesen Text verfasste, den neben anderen auch Martin Luther redigierte. Der "Unterricht der Visitatoren" ist ein so komplexes Buch, dass sich Wissenschaftler verschiedener Disziplinen damit im Frühjahr 2015 auf einer von der Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft geförderten Tagung in Jena auseinandergesetzt haben. Der aus dieser Tagung entstandene Aufsatzband vereint juristische, historische und theologische Beiträge, die sich durch gründliche Quellenkenntnis auszeichnen. Mit Beiträgen von Konrad Amann, Christin Bärwald, Joachim Bauer, Dagmar Blaha, Michael Beyer, Johannes Ehmann, Ralf Frassek, Ernst Koch, Volker Leppin, Stefan Michel, Georg Schmidt, Christopher Spehr, Siegrid Westphal und Eike Wolgast ["Der Unterricht der Visitatoren (Instruction for Visitors)" and the Implementation of the Reformation in the Electorate of Saxony] When "Der Unterricht der Visitatoren (Instruction for Visitors)" was published in Wittenberg in March 1528 it constituted a compendium to initiate the reformation. Readers could now inform themselves of the reformational process of the church in the electorate of Saxony. John, Elector of Saxony arranged that Philip Melanchthon composed this text together with administrative lawyers, and that among others Martin Luther revised it. "Der Unterricht der Visitatoren" is such a complex work that researchers from different disciplines looked into that subject at a conference sponsored by the German Research Foundation in Jena in spring 2015. This volume is the outcome of the meeting and combines juridical, historical and theological articles characterized by their thorough knowledge of the sources.
