Inspired by the old African proverb: "When an old man dies, a library burns to the ground," high-school student Morgan Reilly sought to preserve as many Maine libraries as he could by interviewing men and women from Maine who served in World War II and preserving their stories. All of these veterans taught him something, too, not just about how to fight a war, but how to live a life. They were never preachy, never full of themselves. Each of them knew they had participated in something great and special, but none of them thought that they, themselves, were great or special. There was Fred Collins, the sixteen-year-old Marine who used his Boy Scout training to clip a wounded soldier's chest together using safety pins from machine gun bandoliers while under withering fire on Iwo Jima. Or Inex Louise Roney, who served as a gunnery instructor for the Marines, hoping she could end the war sooner and bring her brother home. Or Harold Lewis, who held onto hope despite being shot down out of the sky, nearly free-falling to his death, and spending four months behind enemy lines in Italy. Or jean Marc Desjardins, whose near-death experiences defusing German bombs with his buddy Puddinghead, taught Reilly the value of a good friend.

Mercy and Grace Neighborhood Heroes is a story of servanthood at an early age. This story was inspired early one morning while praying and enjoying quiet time with my heavenly Father. It was written out of inspiration to show that children can volunteer and feel like they make a difference in the world. Both Mercy and Grace love to help in their community. Mercy loves to sing and has been told she has the voice of an angel. She uses her angelic voice to sing to the elderly in a local nursing home. Grace doesn't want anyone to go hungry. She volunteers by making and passing out sandwiches for the less fortunate. When the girls are faced with a struggle that would bring a halt to their service, they enlist two friends to help. Communities change through growth. This story shows how four friends put their heads together by enlisting the help and advice of the Father. They show the community how they can continue volunteering and how larger companies can change their image because of it.

Abandoned lots and litter-strewn pathways, or rows of green beans and pockets of wildflowers? Graffiti-marked walls and desolate bus stops, or shady refuges and comfortable seating? What transforms a dingy, inhospitable area into a dynamic gathering place? How do individuals take back their neighborhood? Neighborhoods decline when the people who live there lose their connection and no longer feel part of their community. Recapturing that sense of belonging and pride of place can be as simple as planting a civic garden or placing some benches in a park. The Great Neighborhood Book explains how most struggling communities can be revived, not by vast infusions of cash, not by government, but by the people who live there. The author addresses such challenges as traffic control, crime, comfort and safety, and developing economic vitality. Using a technique called "placemaking"-- the process of transforming public space -- this exciting guide offers inspiring real-life examples that show the magic that happens when individuals take small steps, and motivate others to make change. This book will motivate not only neighborhood activists and concerned citizens but also urban planners, developers and policy-makers.

Ordinary Heroes recreates the sights, sounds and textures of a world gone by - a world of freedom, innocence and mystery - where boys leave home at 6:00 in the morning and return home for dinner - a world of sleep outs and midnight escapades. 14 year old Randy's life begins as a near-death experience. But - cerebral palsy aside - by 1959, he loves Sandra Dee, Sandy Koufax, the Dodgers, Wolfman Jack - and a girl named Daisy Clover - in that order. Things begin to pop when the boys poke around the crumbling Jefferson place and discover perplexing evidence - pointing to something very different than the official version of their neighborhood hero's death - confusing clues, threatening notes, phone calls - and violence. If 19 year old Scotty Jefferson's death is an "open and shut, police slam dunk" - why all the fuss? Ordinary Heroes salutes the goodness of boys everywhere!

During the 1950s and 1960s, Asbury Park, New Jersey, was the place to be-to stroll along the boardwalk, to sunbathe, and, most importantly, to listen to live music. But since the city fell into ruin, culminating in the race riots of the 1970s, many were left to wonder if the former rock 'n' roll mecca had been silenced forever. In Local Heroes, author Anders Mårtensson and photographer Jörgen Johansson revisit the myths, legends, and romantic visions of the music scene in a town that is striving to make a comeback. While the story of Asbury Park is inseparable from widely popular artists, such as Bruce Springsteen, Steven van Zandt, and Southside Johnny Lyon, Local Heroes pays tribute to these musicians alongside the many other talents who stayed behind, playing in local clubs, helping to forge what became known as the "Jersey Shore sound." In a series of original interviews, readers will hear first-hand from the people who wrote, performed, and lived the music. Accompanied by exclusive photographs, musical personalities such as Max Weinberg, Garry Tallent, Richie "LaBamba" Rosenberg, Danny Federici, Bill Chinnock, Vini Lopez, Pete Yorn, and many others are brought to life. Whether the redevelopment efforts underway in Asbury Park today will someday serve as the stage for music legends of tomorrow is a story that has yet to play out. But for now, rock 'n' roll fans can delight in a stunning tribute to a city and its talents whose music continues to play on.

Community Social Work Practice In An Urban Context written by Melvin Delgado and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-09-16 with Social Science categories.

Community social work practice based on a capacity enhancement model offers tremendous potential for unifying communities consisting of groups from very different cultural backgrounds, and in the process of doing so, make physical changes in the community. Community Social Work Practice in An Urban Context aims to teach graduate students with an emphasis on community and urban social work how to create positive community environments in marginalized urban-based communities. The use of murals, gardens, playgrounds, and sculptures, for example provide social workers with an opportunity to identify, engage, and plan services with communities. These projects, in turn, are based upon a community's strengths and represent an effort at developing a community's capacity to help itself with assistance from professionals.
