Questo è un libro sulla musica e sulla sua organizzazione sociale, perché la musica è un fatto sociale e come tale chiede di essere affrontata. Certo, la musica è anche oggetto, campo e spesso feticcio di quanti della sua conoscenza e del suo apprezzamento fanno una professione: critici musicali, storici della musica, musicologi, musicisti, giornalisti musicali, ecc. Non dobbiamo dimenticare che in ballo ci sono licenze e mandati professionali, quindi risorse e posizioni, e che la musica è un campo non solo di studi e di giudizio estetico ma anche di confronti e scontri, di lotte e conflitti, di alleanze e compromessi, la cui posta in gioco è la definizione del concetto stesso di musica, dei suoi valori e dei suoi significati. È questa la premessa da cui muovono i capitoli che compongono il presente volume, in cui gli strumenti della sociologia e della storia sociale e culturale vengono mobilitati per parlare della Scala, di Toscanini, di opera, di jazz, di festival, di Sanremo, di Paolo Conte e Luigi Tenco, di canzone d’autore e in generale delle gerarchie di legittimità musicale che il nostro Paese, l’Italia, non solo esibisce come molti altri Paesi, ma rappresenta in modo emblematico proprio in virtù del suo posto nella storia globale – rectius occidentale – della musica.

Oltre a quello immediatamente visibile di contenere tanto contributi in lingua italiana che in lingua inglese, si noterà che esso è realmente dedicato a Tullia in ogni sua parte, perché i saggi che contiene fanno riferimento diretto al suo lavoro e ai suoi interessi di studio e ricerca. Tullia Magrini fondò nel 1992 lo Study Group su "Anthropology of Music in Mediterranean Cultures" dell'International Council for Traditional Music (UNESCO) e, nel 1996, la pionieristica rivista elettronica Music and Anthropology. I contributi al volume non provengono solo da etnomusicologi, dal momento che Tullia riteneva che negli studi mediterranei la dimensione storica fosse altrettanto importante di quella antropologica. Cinepoiesis, or cinema of poetry, strikes us as a strange combination, a phrase we initially read as an oxymoron. Poetry is often associated with the abstract and the evocative, while cinema suggests the concrete and the visible. Yet, various visual media use strong and often contradictory images, whose symbolic force and visual impact stimulate the public’s attention. Abstract and emblematic images surround us, and the poetic nature of these images lies in the way they speak beyond their apparent limits and stimulate connections on a subjective level. A prosaic world like the contemporary one, though, no longer seems to hold a place for poetry. We are inundated by the need to tell and to be told, the need to build our lives through narratives. But it is precisely here, in this contemporary landscape, that the cinema of poetry attempts to establish a space for itself, exchanging the productive and industrial apparatus for the poetic stimulus of a sensory experience. A Grammar of Cinepoiesis is a theoretical and practical guide to the cinema of poetry, to its tools and forms. It examines how the language of a “cinema of poetry” works both in its theoretical foundations and in its modes of representation, and how it takes shape in the exemplary practice of Italian authors such as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini, and the more recent Franco Piavoli and Matteo Garrone.

This volume explores the dense networks created by diplomatic relationships between European courts and aristocratic households in the early modern age, with the emphasis on celebratory events and the circulation of theatrical plots and practitioners promoted by political and diplomatic connections. The offices of plenipotentiary ministers were often outposts providing useful information about cultural life in foreign countries. Sometimes the artistic strategies defined through the exchanges of couriers were destined to leave a legacy in the history of arts, especially of music and theatre. Ministers favored or promoted careers, described or made pieces of repertoire available to new audiences, and even supported practitioners in their difficult travels by planning profitable tours. They stood behind extraordinary artists and protected many stage performers with their authority, while carefully observing and transmitting precious information about the cultural and musical life of the countries where they resided.

Detention camps exceed the juridical concept of punishment and crime. This book comprises two parts: 1. a collected volume that discusses camps not as something of the past, but as a paradigmatic political space in which ordinary law is completely suspended, and 2. an Italian-English parallel text of the war diary of an Italian prisoner during his confinement at the Stalag X-B internment camp near Sandbostel from 1943–1945. 1. The Human Condition of Exception: Collected Essays Edited by Aisling Reid and Valentina Surace Written in Italian and English, the essays collected in this volume explore the issue of camps and suffering from various perspectives, including philosophical inquiry, literary analysis, historical description and legal assessment. As Agamben suggests, the camp embodies the state of exception. A dehumanising camp life will therefore emerge every time such a structure is created. What happens in camps exceeds the juridical concept of punishment, as well as that of crime. Prisoners are faced with a ‘useless’ pain (Levinas) as it is not the expiation of a fault. Prisoners attempt to describe their extreme suffering through their diaries. Their experience, however, cannot be entirely communicated. Even their screams, which express humanity at the extreme limit of its un-power, are silenced. Given the recent popularity of right-wing politics, as well as the centenary of Mussolini’s march on Rome, such research is more urgent than ever. The book will appeal to readers with an interest in philosophy as well as Irish history scholars studying internment during Partition and The Troubles in Northern Ireland. 2. Aldo Quarisa’s Diary: An Italian-English Edition Edited by Aisling Reid and Valentina Surace. Transcribed and with a preface by Galileo Sartor. Translation of the diary by Aisling Reid (Italian-English). In 1943, Aldo Quarisa worked at a military school in Florence, where he taught literature. In October of that year, one month after Italy had surrendered to the Allied forces, the Italians declared war on the Germans. In Florence, the German occupiers responded quickly, by arresting and deporting people with military connections to numerous concentration camps in Austria. Quite suddenly, Aldo was detained and deported through a network of camps, including Benjaminovo and the Stalag X-B internment camp, near the Austrian village of Sandbostel. For two years, he found himself imprisoned alongside other Italians, including the celebrated journalist Giovannino Guareschi, who secretly kept a diary that was later published as his Diario Clandestino 1943–1945 in 1946. Much like Guareschi, Aldo also kept a diary and excerpts are published here in both Italian and English for the first time. The diary describes in unprecedented detail the monotony of camp life, the cruelty of the guards and the prisoners’ struggle to survive. The text is an important document that preserves the memory and voices of all those who suffered during the war and will inevitably be of interest to readers with an interest in World War II.
