Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich BWL - Unternehmensführung, Management, Organisation, Note: 2,0, Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen (Fachbereich Wirtschaftswissenschaften), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Befasst man sich mit Literatur, die sich unter dem Schlagwort Neo-Institutionalismus subsumieren lässt, fällt schnell auf, dass es sich hierbei um keinen rein ökonomischen oder gar betriebswirtschaftlichen Ansatz handelt. Vielmehr findet der theoretische Rahmen des Neo-Institutionalismus seine Anwendung in nahezu allen Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften. Für die vorliegende Arbeit sind dabei vor allem ökonomische und soziologische Betrachtungsweisen von Bedeutung, da diese den engsten Bezug zu Unternehmungswandel aufweisen bzw. als Erklärungsansatz dafür herangezogen werden können. Neo-Institutionalismus aus den Bereichen der Rechtswissenschaft, Politologie, Theologie oder Philosophie soll daher im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit ausgeklammert werden. Allerdings wird auch bei der Beschränkung auf zwei wissenschaftliche Disziplinen nach kurzer Zeit klar, dass in der Literatur keineswegs definitorische oder terminologische Übereinstimmung hinsichtlich der im Titel dieser Arbeit verwendeten Begriffe „Neo-Institutionalismus“ und „Organisationen“ besteht. So wird „Neo-Institutionalismus“ in der Literatur zum Teil synonym verwendet mit Institutionalismus (ohne Präfix), Institutionenökonomik oder Neue Institutionenökonomik. Für den vorliegenden Text sollen die beiden letztgenannten Begriffe synonym den ökonomischen Theorien zugeschrieben werden, Neo-Institutionalismus in seiner überschreibenden Funktion aber nicht ausschließlich den soziologischen, sondern beiden Ansätzen. Für den hier vorliegenden Kontext, dies sei bereits vorweggenommen, bietet sich eine recht enge institutionelle Definition, im Sinne von (Wirtschafts-)Organisation, als profit-orientierte Unternehmung an. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit besteht also darin, Wandel von Organisationen, sprich Unternehmungen, mithilfe des neo-institutionalistischen Theoriegefüges zu untersuchen und zu begründen. Dazu soll in Kapitel 2 zunächst eine kurze historische Einführung in die Entstehung des Neo-Institutionalismus gegeben werden. Kapitel 3 stellt anschließend die beiden wichtigen Ausprägungen, den ökonomischen und den soziologischen, vor, ehe in Kapitel 4 explizite Erklärungsansätze für den Wandel von Unternehmungen beschrieben werden. Kapitel 5 liefert dem Leser eine abschließende Zusammenfassung und Schlussfolgerung.

Die neo-institutionalistische Bewegung kam insbesondere in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika Ende der siebziger Jahre auf (vgl. Türk: 2000, S. 269). Sie ist gekennzeichnet durch eine enorme Vielfalt an unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen, so dass es relativ schwer erscheint, alle Vertreter und Strömungen gleichermaßen zu betrachten und zu beleuchten. Aus diesem Grund werde Ich mich inhaltlich auf die bis heute bedeutendsten Vertreter, darunter John W. Meyer, Brian Rowan, Paul J. DiMaggio, Walter W. Powell als Vertreter des makroinstitutionalistischen Ansatzes und Lynne Zucker sowie Marshall W. Meyer als Vertreter des mikrofundierten Neo-Institutionalismus beschränken. Auffallend an der neo-institutionalistischen Ausrichtung ist bei allen Vertretern, dass sie die Erscheinung der Institution oder Organisation aus einem anderen Blickwinkel als bisher in der Organisationstheorie und -Soziologie üblich, betrachten. "Leitidee dieser Herangehensweise ist, dass Organisationen weit weniger von kulturell neutralen Effizienzüberlegungen abhängen als vielmehr von einem institutionalisierten Umfeld, in dem bestimmte kulturelle Werte präsent sind" (Türk: 2000, S. 269). Klassischerweise wurde in der Organisationstheorie bis dahin ein etwas anderer Standpunkt dazu eingenommen: Als Erklärungsfaktor für Organisationsstrukturen wurde deren Legitimität fast vollständig ausgeleuchtet und stattdessen wurden diese von einer rationalen und effizienten Abstimmung der Arbeitsaktivitäten abhängig gemacht.
