Molto si parlò di questo libro, quando apparve nel 1979. Ma allora notando soprattutto ciò che Sciascia vi dice della realtà pubblica che lo circondava: l’Italia come paese «senza verità», dal caso del bandito Giuliano all’affare Moro, la cui ombra si stende sulle ultime pagine di "Nero su nero". Leggendolo oggi, affiora però con altrettanta evidenza la sua altra faccia, più segreta: quella del libro dove Sciascia ha consegnato, con scrupolosa precisione, pagine essenziali sul suo modo di intendere lo scrivere e la letteratura, che proprio qui viene mirabilmente definita quale «sistema di “oggetti eterni” ... che variamente, alternativamente, imprevedibilmente splendono, si eclissano, tornano a splendere e ad eclissarsi – e così via – alla luce della verità». (Parole che vanno lette accostandole ad altre, significativamente fra parentesi, dove si dice che la letteratura «è la più assoluta forma che la verità possa assumere»). Si direbbe dunque che, in questo momento, ciò che per Sciascia era più personale e nascosto venisse naturalmente a mescolarsi con i fatti della cronaca. Così nacque "Nero su nero", accumulandosi per dieci anni torbidi, fra il 1969 e 1979, ma obbedendo sempre a un imperativo di chiarezza e nettezza – libro indispensabile per capire Sciascia in genere e soprattutto il suo ultimo periodo. E, di fatto, già il titolo risponde parodisticamente alla banale accusa di pessimismo che tanto spesso gli fu rivolta in quel decennio e anche dopo, offrendoci «la nera scrittura sulla nera pagina della realtà».

Mosca, 20 settembre 1968. Solo all’inizio degli anni Novanta Rubén riuscirà a fuggire dal suo Gulag personale e, ritrovata la madre, comincerà a raccontare la sua storia, rivelandosi scrittore vero. Perché quello che colpisce in questo libro, e si imprime nella memoria del lettore, non è tanto la cronaca di un’infanzia e di un’adolescenza trascorse all’interno di un sistema feroce, dove in nome dell’ideologia si perpetrano vessazioni quotidiane, ma la voce che trasforma l’orrore in narrazione, e lo sguardo che questo stesso orrore trasforma in immagini – a volte commoventi, altre volte grottesche, altre ancora di corrosiva comicità, ma sempre potentemente tratteggiate, come lo sono del resto tutti i personaggi che attraversano la vita di Rubén: la studentessa spagnola che balla per lui senza musica in una stanza d’ospedale; il cane randagio monco di una zampa che i bambini adottano; le inservienti e le insegnanti, potenti deità femminili raramente benevole e più spesso minacciose; il ragazzo Saša che si trascina nella neve fino all’aula per rivendicare il suo diritto a studiare; e Sergej, il ragazzo senza gambe che si allena per mesi allo scopo di poter fare a pugni con uno che le gambe le ha tutt’e due...

Postmodern Ethics offers a new perspective on debates surrounding the role of the intellectual in Italian society, and provides an original reading of two important Italian contemporary writers, Leonardo Sciascia and Antonio Tabucchi. It examines the ways in which the two writers use literature to engage with their socio-political environment in a climate informed by the doubts and scepticism of postmodernism, after traditional forms of impegno had been abandoned. Postmodern Ethics explores ways in which Tabucchi and Sciascia further their engagement through embracing the very factors which problematized traditional committed writing, such as the absence of fixed truths, the inability of language to fully communicate ideas and intertextuality. Postmodern Ethics provides an innovative new reading of Tabucchi’s works. It challenges the standard view in critical literature that his writing may be divided into ‘engaged’ texts which dialogue with society and ‘postmodern’ texts which focus on literary interiority, suggesting instead that socio-political engagement underpins all of his works. It also offers a new lens on Sciascia’s writing, unpacking why Sciascia, unlike his contemporaries, is able to maintain a belief in literature as a means of dialoguing with society. Postmodern Ethics explores the ways in which Tabucchi and Sciascia approach issues of terrorism, justice, the anti-mafia movement, immigration and the value of reading in connected yet distinct ways, suggesting that a close genealogy may be drawn between these two key intellectual figures.

Sciascia frequently alludes to French authors, and is often taken to have a close relationship with French literature in general.
