Pubblicato nel 1974, Anarchy, State, and Utopia di Robert Nozick è subito diventato un classico del pensiero politico contemporaneo. Il libro d’esordio del filosofo della Harvard University ebbe grande successo a livello internazionale, dando dignità scientifica e accademica al libertarismo, una declinazione della filosofia politica imperniata sui diritti individuali, la proprietà privata, il libero mercato e, nel caso di Nozick, lo Stato minimo (il “guardiano notturno” della tradizione liberale classica, però senza il potere di imposizione fiscale). Il dibattito che ne seguì – a cui l’autore non ha mai partecipato – ha visto le tesi nozickiane attaccate da più fronti: non solo, come prevedibile, dai liberal o da socialisti e marxisti vari, ma anche da quei libertari per cui persino lo Stato minimo è troppo: gli anarcocapitalisti capitanati da Murray N. Rothbard. A quarant’anni dalla pubblicazione, l’Istituto Bruno Leoni ha dedicato un ciclo di seminari all’opera prima di Robert Nozick. Questo eBook raccoglie parte dei contributi e ne ospita altri, scritti espressamente per l’occasione. Il taglio interpretativo proposto ha la pretesa di essere a vasto raggio, non considerando le tesi nozickiane solamente come una risposta alla celeberrima difesa del welfare state, sostenuta da John Rawls in A Theory of Justice. L’opera di Nozick viene inquadrata nella filosofia politica del secondo Novecento da Raimondo Cubeddu, mentre Lorenzo Infantino analizza il rapporto tra il filosofo americano e la Scuola austriaca. Le critiche degli anarcocapitalisti sono al centro del saggio di Piero Vernaglione; Stefano Moroni, invece, mette a confronto Nozick con Friedrich A. von Hayek e John Rawls. Eugenio Somaini si sofferma su alcuni aspetti della teoria della giustizia nella proprietà (entitlement theory) di Nozick. Alberto Mingardi si occupa del rapporto tra gli intellettuali e il capitalismo, alla cui analisi ha contribuito anche l’autore di Anarchy, State, and Utopia. L’ultimo termine del trittico che compone il titolo dell’opera di Nozick è l’aspetto trattato da Carlo Lottieri. Nell’Introduzione, Nicola Iannello inserisce il libro d’esordio nel più ampio quadro della produzione del filosofo harvardiano.

Questa raccolta comprende le parti dei "Principî di economia politica", delle "Ricerche sul metodo delle scienze sociali" e gli altri scritti nei quali si sviluppa il confronto di Carl Menger con Adam Smith. Menger riteneva che gli errori di Smith fossero pari alla sua grandezza e, elaborando un “teoria generale dell’azione umana”, dello scambio, del capitale e della nascita ed evoluzione delle istituzioni sociali fondata sulla teoria dei bisogni e dei valori soggettivi, si proponeva di trarre la scienza economica e la filosofia delle scienze sociali dall’impasse nella quale, a suo avviso, era finita. Si tratta di una critica radicale, che giunge fino al punto di fare di Smith un involontario precursore del socialismo e che vale la pena di ripensare, anche perché con essa Menger prende le distanze tanto dal "laissez-faire", quanto dalla teoria della "invisible hand", ponendo le premesse per quel distacco dall’economia politica classica che sarà sviluppato dai successivi esponenti della Scuola Austriaca in una nuova e influente filosofia politica liberale.

Come è stato efficacemente sintetizzato, «se esistessero uomini onniscienti, se potessimo sapere non solo tutto quanto tocca la soddisfazione dei nostri desideri di oggi, ma pure i bisogni e le aspirazioni future, resterebbe ben poco da dire a favore della libertà». Questo volume è un viaggio attraverso pensatori che, nell’accertata ignoranza e fallibilità degli esseri umani, hanno visto la ragione della libertà individuale di scelta. Si sono perciò impegnati a “isolare” le condizioni che rendono possibile o impossibile tale libertà, la cui istituzionalizzazione permette la mobilitazione di conoscenze e risorse altamente disperse all’interno della società, accende cioè un esteso processo di esplorazione dell’ignoto e di correzione degli errori. L’autore si rifà soprattutto a quella tradizione anglo-austriaca che, da Bernard de Mandeville, David Hume, Adam Smith, giunge a Carl Menger e Friedrich A. von Hayek. La prosa è matura e scorrevole. I concetti sono comprensibili, oltre che agli addetti ai lavori, al vasto pubblico. Si percorre così un itinerario che consente di individuare i “motivi” che impongono di allargare, quanto più possibile, il territorio della cooperazione sociale volontaria. Il che limita la sfera d’intervento delle pubbliche autorità, a cui viene attribuita la circoscritta funzione di complemento delle attività liberamente intraprese dai cittadini. È questo l’unico modo per difendersi dall’autoreferenzialità del potere pubblico e dall’utilizzo arbitrario e dilapidatorio delle risorse sociali. Ciò significa che la libertà individuale di scelta sta alla base della crescita e del benessere collettivo. In appendice al volume, vengono raccolti due scritti su Luigi Einaudi, anch’egli esponente della famiglia dei “cercatori di libertà”: il primo riguarda i suoi rapporti culturali con la Scuola austriaca di economia, il secondo il suo progetto europeista.
