Das Bündnis zwischen dem nationalsozialistischen Deutschland und dem faschistischen Italien war von heftigen Konflikten, Meinungsverschiedenheiten und gegenseitigen Überrumpelungen geprägt. Trotzdem funktionierte die "Achse Berlin-Rom" bis zu Mussolinis Absetzung im Juli 1943 überraschend zuverlässig. Nils Fehlhaber geht auf die Suche nach den Gründen und nimmt dafür einen Bereich in den Blick, der bisher von der Forschung weitgehend außer Acht gelassen wurde: die Netzwerke zwischen den politischen Eliten beider Regimes. Der Autor vertritt die These, dass die "Achse" viel weniger durch diplomatische Verträge oder Ideologie zusammengehalten wurde, als bisher angenommen. Stattdessen festigten persönliche Kontakte das Bündnis: bei Treffen in Rom oder Berlin, auf gemeinsamen Rundreisen durch Sizilien oder Ostpreußen oder bei privaten Besuchen in Begleitung der Familien. Dabei entstanden widerstandsfähige Netzwerke zwischen beiden Regimes, die in Krisensituationen einen Bruch verhinderten.

Die "Achse Berlin-Rom" war mehr als ein politisch-militärisches Projekt, sie erstreckte sich auf alle Bereiche der Gesellschaft. Wissenschaft und Kunst machten keine Ausnahme. Auch hier entstanden intensive Beziehungen, deren Wurzeln bis in die 1920er Jahre zurückreichten. Zahlreiche Intellektuelle beteiligten sich an dieser akademischen "Achse" zwischen Italien und Deutschland – unter ihnen auch viele deutsche Juden, die in Italien eine "Zuflucht auf Widerruf" (Klaus Voigt) gefunden hatten, ehe sie nach der Einführung der Rassengesetze auch dort unter Druck gerieten. Namhafte Experten aus fünf Ländern analysieren die Vielfalt dieser lange ignorierten Netzwerke, die freilich nicht nur von Kooperation und Transfer geprägt waren. Genauso oft standen sie im Zeichen von Abgrenzung und latenter Konkurrenz, die auch das "Achsen"-Bündnis insgesamt bestimmten. Die Botschaft dieses innovativen Ansatzes ist klar: Für eine interdisziplinär informierte Geschichtswissenschaft gibt es noch viel zu tun.

This book takes up the stimuli of new international historiography, albeit focusing mainly on the two regimes that undoubtedly provided the model for Fascist movements in Europe, namely the Italian and the German. Starting with a historiographical assessment of the international situation, vis-à-vis studies on Fascism and National Socialism, and then concentrate on certain aspects that are essential to any study of the two dictatorships, namely the complex relationships with their respective societies, the figures of the two dictators and the role of violence. This volume reaches beyond the time-frame encompassing Fascism and National Socialism experiences, directing the attention also toward the period subsequent to their demise. This is done in two ways. On the one hand, examining the uncomfortable architectural legacy left by dictatorships to the democratic societies that came after the war. On the other hand, the book addresses an issue that is very much alive both in the strictly historiographical and political science debate, that is to say, to what extent can the label of Fascism be used to identify political phenomena of these current times, such as movements and parties of the so-called populist and souverainist right.

Mit keinem anderen Land und in keiner anderen Kunstsparte unterhielten Deutschland und Italien zwischen den beiden Weltkriegen engere Beziehungen als zueinander im Musikbereich. Eine ganze Generation von Musikern, Komponisten wie Interpreten, aber auch Musikwissenschaftlern und Musikpublizisten wurde nachhaltig von diesem Austausch geprägt, dessen Vorzeichen durch und durch ideologisch waren. In den vielfältigen musikpolitischen Kontakten, Einflüssen, Abhängigkeiten und Rivalitäten zwischen den beiden Mächten spiegeln sich unmittelbar deren kulturelle Selbst- und Fremdbilder. Sie stehen exemplarisch für das Verhältnis zwischen dem deutschen und dem italienischen Faschismus und berühren den Kern dieser prekären Beziehung. Ausgezeichnet mit dem Forschungspreis Auswärtige Kulturpolitik des Instituts für Auslandsbeziehungen. Tobias Reichard studierte historische Musikwissenschaft, Italianistik und Rechtswissenschaft. Als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter arbeitete er an der Uni Hamburg und dem Forschungsinstitut für Musiktheater Thurnau/Bayreuth zur Musik in Diktaturen. Seit März 2020 ist er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter des Ben-Haim-Forschungszentrums der Hochschule für Musik und Theater München.
