Die Arbeit stellt die zweisprachige deutsch-italienische Lexikographie in ihrem historischen Werden bis ins 19. Jahrhundert dar. Das Deutsche wird seit etwa 1200 Jahren als Fremdsprache gelernt. Die ältesten Zeugnisse sind mittelalterliche Glossare für Reisende. Im Hochmittelalter florierte die 'direkte Methode': Man lernte Volkssprachen durch mündliche Instruktion. Wirtschaftliche Interessen und Massenvertreibungen im Zeichen von Glaubenskonflikten intensivieren im Spätmittelalter und in der frühen Neuzeit die Nachfrage nach Kenntnissen des Deutschen. Systematischer Deutschunterricht ist im 15. Jahrhundert in Norditalien nachweisbar, und auch in Mittel- und Osteuropa wird in dieser Zeit Deutsch unterrichtet. Eine große Vielfalt von Sprachbüchern, Wörterbüchern, Übungsmaterialien und schließlich auch Lerngrammatiken entsteht im 16. Jahrhundert, und im 17. Jahrhundert existiert bereits ein breites Spektrum von Kozepten und Medien für den Erwerb des Deutschen. Dieses Buch zeichnet erstmals den Gang dieser Entwicklung bis zum Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts.

Gegenstand des Lexikons sind Konzepte, in denen sich das Sprachdenken des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts darstellt und die in begrifflich geordneter Form vorgestellt werden (ca. 200 Termini in 60 Artikeln). Berücksichtigt wird dabei auch die epochenbezogene Dynamik, durch die das Sprachdenken des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts ein Konzeptualisierungsangebot für spätere Zeiträume werden konnte. Es wird von einem Verständnis von Geschichte der Sprachwissenschaft als Problem- und Theoriengeschichte ausgegangen, die Entstehungsbedingungen, Kommunikationsräume und interdisziplinäre Wechselbeziehungen zu berücksichtigen hat. Ergebnisse begriffsgeschichtlicher Forschungen zum Sprachdenken des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts werden vorgestellt. Terminologische Fragestellungen werden ebenso wie die Entfaltung von Konzepten in Texten berücksichtigt. Eine ausführliche Dokumentation der begrifflichen Ausprägung in mehreren europäischen Sprachen rundet die monographischen Darstellungen zu den einzelnen Begriffen ab. Die Artikel unterteilen sich in die Rubriken "Schlüsselwörter des Bezeichnungsfeldes", "Authentische Definitionen" (aus dem Untersuchungszeitraum), "Darstellung des Begriffs und seiner Vernetzung mit anderen Begriffen", "Kontinuität und Rezeption", "Literaturhinweise" (Sekundärliteratur).

The economy has an increasingly powerful role in the contemporary global world. Academic scholars who study names have recognised this, and, as such, onomastic research has expanded from personal and place names towards names that reflect the new commercial culture. Companies are aware of the significance of naming. Brand, product and company names play an important role in business. Culture produces names and names produce culture. Commercial names shape cultures, on the one hand, and changes in cultures may affect commercial names on the other. The world of the economy and business has created its own culture of names, but this naming culture may also affect other names; even place names and personal names are influenced by it. Names in the Economy: Cultural Prospects is composed of 20 articles that were produced from a collection of papers presented in 2012 at the fourth Names in the Economy symposium in Turku, Finland. These articles will equally be of interest to both academics and professionals. The goal of this book is multidisciplinary and theoretically diverse: it contemplates commercial-bound names from the viewpoints of linguistics and onomastics, as well as marketing and branding research. In addition to traditional onomastic standpoints, there are newer linguistic theories, sociological and communicational views, multimodality theory, and branding theories.
