Hitherto, there has been no book that attempted to sum up the breadth of Umberto Eco’s work and it importance for the study of semiotics, communication and cognition. There have been anthologies and overviews of Eco’s work within Eco Studies; sometimes, works in semiotics have used aspects of Eco’s work. Yet, thus far, there has been no overview of the work of Eco in the breadth of semiotics. This volume is a contribution to both semiotics and Eco studies. The 40 scholars who participate in the volume come from a variety of disciplines but have all chosen to work with a favorite quotation from Eco that they find particularly illustrative of the issues that his work raises. Some of the scholars have worked exegetically placing the quotation within a tradition, others have determined the (epistemic) value of the quotation and offered a critique, while still others have seen the quotation as a starting point for conceptual developments within a field of application. However, each article within this volume points toward the relevance of Eco -- for contemporary studies concerning semiotics, communication and cognition.

Pathways to the Origin and Evolition of Meanings in the Universe The book explains why meaning is a part of the universe populated by life, and how organisms generate meanings and then use them for creative transformation of the environment and themselves. This book focuses on interdisciplinary research at the intersection of biology, semiotics, philosophy, ethology, information theory, and the theory of evolution. Such a broad approach provides a rich context for the study of organisms and other semiotic agents in their environments. This methodology can be applied to robotics and artificial intelligence for developing robust, adaptable learning devices. In this book, leading interdisciplinary scholars reveal their vision on how to integrate natural sciences with semiotics, a theory of meaning-making and signification. Developments in biology indicate that the capacity to create and understand signs is not limited to humans or vertebrate animals, but exists in all living organisms - the fact that inspired the integration of biology and semiotics into biosemiotics. The authors discuss the nature of semiotic agents (organisms and other autonomous goal-directed units), meaning, signs, information, memory, evolution, and consciousness. Education has been widely criticised as being too narrowly focused on skills, capacities and the transference of knowledge that can be used in the workplace. As a result of the dominance of economic rationalism and neo-liberalism, it has become commodified and marketed to potential customers. As a consequence, students have become consumers of an educational product and education has become an industry. There is deep dissatisfaction with these neo-liberal developments. What is missing is any conception of education as a key factor in the ‘human formation’ that will lead students to develop the virtues and values that they will need to not only lead successful lives, but also be responsible members of their communities — working for the common good and acting to transform them into just societies. This volume draws together a number of different perspectives on what is meant by ‘human formation’, argues that for a much richer conception of education, and addresses the lack of attention to human fulfilment. It also highlights the importance of philosophy in the articulation of novel ways of conceptualising education — providing alternatives to the dominant neo-liberal and economic rationalist models. The central question with which the book is concerned is a renewed understanding of education as the formation of persons, of civil society and the role of philosophy in fostering that renewal. In this volume there are a variety of voices from diverse traditions and cultures. Both East and West are represented and it might be expected that this would result in a divergence of opinion about the purpose of education. However, in spite of the diversity, there is some significant convergence in thinking about the ways in which education ought to serve the needs of both the individual and their communities. What is also particularly useful, and what is fresh about the essays presented here, is that there is also diversity in the philosophical approaches to the problem. This means that the convergence on the importance of ‘human formation’ as the cornerstone of education does not rely on a privileged philosophical method.

Welche Rolle spielt Intuition beim epistemischen Zugang zu Personen? Intuition fasse ich dabei als unmittelbares Wissen, Personen als zu Bewusstsein fähige Wesen. Im ersten, philosophiegeschichtlichen Teil skizziere ich die schrittweise Entwicklung der Theorie eines unmittelbaren Wissens nicht nur von sich selbst, sondern auch von anderen Personen durch Gustav Teichmüller (1832–1888), Wincenty Lutoslawski (1863–1954) und Nikolaj Losskij (1870–1965). Im zweiten, systematischen Teil zeige ich, dass menschliche Erfahrungen und Lebenspraxis diese Theorie stützen. Zum Aufweis eines unmittelbaren Wissens von anderen Personen ziehe ich verbreitete Erfahrungsformen heran, die von der Philosophie bisher vernachlässigt wurden. Die neuzeitliche Vorstellung einer strikten Trennung der Erlebenswelten von Personen scheint inadäquat zu sein.
