Neue Sachlichkeit is thought by many to have too many diverse elements to be a unified movement. Originally divided by G.F. Hartlaub into two 'wings', Neue Sachlichkeit has since been broken down by critics into more groups, sometimes with opposing styles or regional influences. However, the importance of these divisions has rarely been explored in depth. Unlike previous surveys, which accept Neue Sachlichkeit as a divided entity, this book shows for the first time that in spite of its divisions, it may still be regarded as a unified, coherent movement. While different artists may have sought to express different specific concerns, what they all had in common was that they were uncomfortable with the world as it stood, and it is the way that this was expressed, making use of the object, that gave Neue Sachlichkeit its unity. This was just as true of the literature and photography of Neue Sachlichkeit, where the same themes as those found in the painting were frequently used. The fact that these are shared themes across different cultural media demonstrates that Neue Sachlichkeit reflected a mood of its time, and this book explores the ways in which this mood was expressed.

In jener Aussage deutet sich bereits an, dass das gute und erfüllte Leben nur wenigen Gesellschaftsschichten zukam. Der Großteil der Bevölkerung hatte noch immer mit den Verwirrungen nach dem Krieg zu kämpfen, hinzu kamen Armut und ein beschleunigtes Zeitalter durch neue Technologien und Medien . In dieser Zeit keimte eine neue Kunstströmung auf, die die Weimarer Republik und besonders die „Goldenen Zwanziger“ prägen sollte – die Neue Sachlichkeit. Die Maler begannen, die Dinge so abzubilden, wie sie waren. Dies bezog sich nicht nur auf die visuelle Wahrnehmung, sondern auch auf gefühlte Wahrheiten wie soziale und politische Missstände in der Republik. Die Maler nutzten die Kunst der Malerei als Medium, um die Öffentlichkeit zu erreichen und eben diese Missstände aufzudecken und publik zu machen - sie reagierten auf ihre Umwelt. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird zunächst auf die Neue Sachlichkeit in der Malerei und ihre Charakteristika eingegangen. Im Anschluss wird das Werk „Die Stützen der Gesellschaft“ von George Grosz aus dem Jahr 1926 thematisiert und im Kontext der sozialen und politischen Gegebenheiten der Weimarer Republik betrachtet. Zuletzt wird erläutert, warum gerade George Grosz als Maler und sein Werk „Die Stützen der Gesellschaft“ exemplarisch für die Malerei der Neuen Sachlichkeit stehen.

The Nazi Worker is the second in a three-volume project on the figure of the worker and, by extension, questions of class in twentieth-century German culture. It is based on extensive research in the archives and informed by recent debates on the politics of emotion, the end of class, and the future of work. In seven chapters, the book reconstructs the processes by which National Socialism appropriated aspects of working-class culture and socialist politics and translated class-based identifications into the racialized communitarianism of Volksgemeinschaft (folk community). Arbeitertum (workerdom), the operative term within these processes of appropriation, not only established a discursive framework for integrating proletarian legacies into the cult of the German worker. As a social imaginary, workerdom also modelled the work-related emotions (e.g., joy, pride) essential to the culture of work promoted by the German Labor Front. The contribution of images and stories in creating these new social imaginaries will be reconstructed through highly contextualized readings of the debates about workerdom, Nazi movement novels, worker’s poetry, workers’ sculpture, as well as industrial painting, photography, film, and design.
