Julia Meer stellt die bisherige Rezeptionsgeschichte des »Mythos Neue Typographie« in Frage und arbeitet zugleich die frühe Professionalisierung des Grafik-Designs auf. Durch eine systematische Auswertung von Fachzeitschriften der Jahre 1900-1933 zeigt sie, dass die Neue Typographie weder neu war noch aufgrund ihrer Modernität abgelehnt wurde. Vielmehr wurde sie früh von den Fachleuten gefördert und zu einem werbewirksamen Stil weiterentwickelt. Damit ging ein Prozess einher, in dem sich einige Protagonisten der Avantgarde von Künstlern zu Designern professionalisierten. Die Studie eröffnet neue Perspektiven auf die Wirkungsweise und Verbreitungsprinzipien von Design und das Selbstverständnis von Designern.

This is the first monograph on Scandinavia's 'New Typography'. It provides a detailed account of the movement's lifespan in the region from the 1920s up until the 1940s, when it was largely incorporated into mainstream practice. The book begins by tracing how the New Typography, from its origins in the central and eastern European avant-garde, arrived in Scandinavia. It considers the movement's transformative impact on printing, detailing the cultural and technological reasons why its ability to act as a modernising force varied between different professional groups. The last two chapters look at how New Typography related to Scandinavian society more widely by looking at its ties to functionalism and social democracy, paving the way for a discussion of the reciprocal relationship between the culture of practitioners and the cultural work performed through their practice. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, ideals of technological progress and mass consumerism shaped the print cultures of countries across the globe. Magazines in Europe, the USA, Latin America, and Asia inflected a shared internationalism and technological optimism. But there were equally powerful countervailing influences, of patriotic or insurgent nationalism, and of traditionalism, that promoted cultural differentiation. In their editorials, images, and advertisements magazines embodied the tensions between these domestic imperatives and the forces of global modernity. Magazines and Modern Identities explores how these tensions played out in the magazine cultures of ten different countries, describing how publications drew on, resisted, and informed the ideals and visual forms of global modernism. Chapters take in the magazines of Australia, Europe and North America, as well as China, The Soviet Turkic states, and Mexico. With contributions from leading international scholars, the book considers the pioneering developments in European and North American periodicals in the modernist period, whilst expanding the field of enquiry to take in the vibrant magazine cultures of east Asia and Latin America. How a visionary, never-realized architectural project, devised by one of the twentieth century’s greatest artists, shaped architectural culture in Europe between the world wars. After achieving international acclaim as a painter and designer, El Lissitzky set out in 1924 to convince the world—and himself—that he was also an architect. He did this with a project for a “horizontal skyscraper,” which he gave an obscure and untranslatable name: Wolkenbügel. Eight of these buildings, perched atop slender pillars, were intended to stand at major intersections along Moscow’s Boulevard Ring, integrating the flow of tramlines, subways, and elevators. In Wolkenbügel, Richard Anderson explores Lissitzky’s translation of visual and textual media into spatial ideas and offers an in-depth study of the surviving drawings and archival artifacts related to Lissitzky's most complex architectural proposal. This book offers a new and definitive account of how Lissitzky expanded the conceptual and representational tools available to the modern architect by drawing on many sources—including photography, typography, exhibition design, and even the elementary forms of the alphabet—to create the Wolkenbügel. Anderson shows how the production and reception of a paper project served to link key ideas and relationships that animated the worlds of art and architecture, offering a new view on received histories of the interwar avant-gardes. Nicht erst seit Arts and Crafts ist das Verhältnis zwischen Kunst und Design Gegenstand kontroverser Diskussio-nen. Das Verhältnis beider Gattungen kann auf eine lange Geschichte unterschiedlicher Positionsbestimmungen, Annäherungen und erneuter Differenzierungen zurück-blicken. Ein Perspektivwechsel ist also dringend geboten. Zitzelspergers Argumentation ist dabei eine historische, die den Berührungs- und Abstoßungspunkten von Kunst und Design seit der Renaissance nachspürt. Den entschei-denden Einschnitt verortet Zitzlsperger gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts und in einer Engführung des Designs mit der neu entstandenen Philosophie des amerikanischen Pragmatismus. Abseits von Ontologie und Produktions-ästhetik eröffnet sich hier ein neuer Horizont, der sich auf die dem Design zugrundeliegende Intentionalität sowie deren praktische Realisierung hin öffnet.
