This essay focuses on two illustrations of the Labours of the Months', incorporated into a pair of early ninth century manuscripts containing astronomical and calendrical treatises. They are extremely significant as the first examples of this popular medieval topic. Hammer's work has two objectives: the first section examines the illustrations and their manuscripts from an art and intellectual history perspective, to place the pictures in the context of Carolingian cultural life, and also to determine whether the pictures are anything more then depictions of rural life. The second section aims to place the pictures in a more conventional historical context, suggesting why the manuscripts were produced in that period, who sponsored them, and their programmatic intent. This paper often goes beyond its primary subject to provide interesting insights into Carolingian politics.

Martin Bucer's De vera et falsa caenae dominicae administratione marks the collapse of his hopes for a negotiated settlement of the Reformation in Germany. He completed the work in March 1546 as fresh negotiations between Catholic and Protestant theologians reached an impasse in Regensburg, as the second session of the Council of Trent was meeting, and as Charles V prepared to make war on the Protestant League of Schmalkalden. At one level the work deals with the church's authority to regulate the celebration of the Lord's Supper, but at a more fundamental level it challenges moderate Catholics such as the humanist scholar Bartholomaeus Latomus to decide whether their ultimate loyalties lie with pope and council or with Christ and his Gospel.

Historians of Technology have failed to include the larger contribution and influence of Ctesibius’ compressor-driven Hydraulis with its pneumatic pumps, keyboard, and organ pipes in the path of critical preparatory events leading up to the ‘Latent’ Industrial Revolution. One should also realize that Ctesibius had all the parts and sub-assemblies on hand to invent the first Steam Hydraulis or Calliope, as illustrated on the front book cover of this work. From the 'Fertile Crescent' of the Persian Empire to the Hellenistic Library of Alexandria, Vitruvius writing brought the Hydraulis to the Abbey of St. Gall in 1414 during the Renaissance. Its path then took it through Italy, Germany, and the Paris of Louis XIV along the Arch of Industrial Reawakening. This was the Hydraulis 2-millennium path from Antiquity to its return reigniting the 'Latent' Industrial Revolution.
