Correlated activity in populations of neurons has been observed in many brain regions and plays a central role in cortical coding, attention, and network dynamics. Accurately quantifying neuronal correlations presents several difficulties. For example, despite recent advances in multicellular recording techniques, the number of neurons from which spiking activity can be simultaneously recorded remains orders magnitude smaller than the size of local networks. In addition, there is a lack of consensus on the distribution of pairwise spike cross correlations obtained in extracellular multi-unit recordings. These challenges highlight the need for theoretical and computational approaches to understand how correlations emerge and to decipher their functional role in the brain.

"The collective activities of neural population are known to be essential for neural coding. With aggregated activities of roughly 100 billion neurons, the human brain is capable in coding complex sensory signals. However, just combining activities of individual neurons is not enough. Instead, it has been shown that interactions within the population play a significant role in neural coding. Therefore, in order to understand how neurons code information, it is essential to understand the characteristics and contributions of such interactions. One way to do so is through investigating the relationships of neural activities which are known as neural correlations. Correlations have been ubiquitously shown in various brain areas. However, magnitudes and contributions of correlations alter across studies. These variations show that correlations can be highly dynamic and leads to serious controversy. In this thesis, I illustrated dynamics and characterized influences of correlations on information coding in a well-characterized neural circuit called the electrosensory lateral line lobe (ELL) of the weakly electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus across distinct perceptual contexts, i.e. local (for prey detection) and global (for communication) stimulation. The study was divided into two parts: (i) characterizations of the correlations in neural responses measured by multi-array electrodes and (ii) simulations of correlations in ELL neurons. For the characterization, spike count correlation (SCC) and cross-correlogram (CCG) were implemented to quantify neural correlations, and information theory was employed to examine the contribution of correlation dynamics on information coding. For the simulations, the leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) model was used to simulate the activity of ELL neurons. In the first part, using the isolated responses of six ELL neurons, I confirmed previous studies by showing that same-type and different-type neuron population were positively and negatively correlated, respectively. Moreover, I found that there were variations in correlation strengths presumably resulted by population heterogeneity. With respect to stimulus frequency, population averages of SCCs and CCGs showed that correlations were low at extremely low and high frequency ranges. In this thesis, we analyze the effect of the correlations in neural activity on the information that is encoded in and can be decoded from a population of neurons. Various noise models describing these correlations are considered - in particular, we use models that take into account the pairwise correlations and other, simpler models that assume shared global additive and/or multiplicative noise factors. The performance of these models on firing rate prediction (encoding) and population decoding are studied. Our analyses show a significant beneficial effect of pairwise correlations on encoding models, with much of this benefit being explained by the global noise models. However, the effects of correlations on decoding vary among our datasets, providing an empirical justification to the theoretical results suggesting correlations can be either helpful or harmful to decoding.

How visual content is represented in neuronal population codes and how to analyze such codes with multivariate techniques. Vision is a massively parallel computational process, in which the retinal image is transformed over a sequence of stages so as to emphasize behaviorally relevant information (such as object category and identity) and deemphasize other information (such as viewpoint and lighting). The processes behind vision operate by concurrent computation and message passing among neurons within a visual area and between different areas. The theoretical concept of "population code" encapsulates the idea that visual content is represented at each stage by the pattern of activity across the local population of neurons. Understanding visual population codes ultimately requires multichannel measurement and multivariate analysis of activity patterns. Over the past decade, the multivariate approach has gained significant momentum in vision research. Functional imaging and cell recording measure brain activity in fundamentally different ways, but they now use similar theoretical concepts and mathematical tools in their modeling and analyses. With a focus on the ventral processing stream thought to underlie object recognition, this book presents recent advances in our understanding of visual population codes, novel multivariate pattern-information analysis techniques, and the beginnings of a unified perspective for cell recording and functional imaging.
