Nowadays, neurodevelopmental disorders comprise a large proportion of mental health diagnoses. These disorders, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, include intellectual disabilities, communication disorders, autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, specific learning disorders, and motor disorders. Current research is pointing in the direction of schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, and other disorders being included in the category of neurodevelopmental disorders as well. There is a great deal of overlap among these disorders and they are best understood in a dimensional fashion. This book sets out the future of psychiatry in relation to these disorders and what is basically a new understanding of psychiatry in recent decades. Chapters cover topics such as early recognition of schizophrenia, epilepsy, and the genetics of ataxia telangiectasia. Also included is an examination of the complex issue of systems biology and neurodevelopment.

Offers useful strategies for creating rapport between the linear-focused DSM-5-TR and the circular causality approach of systems-oriented clinicians With a focus on clinical applications, this unique text for students of diagnosis, family systems, counseling, and other mental health disciplines demonstrates how to use the DSM-5-TR to aid assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and intervention from a relational perspective. With detailed descriptions, the second edition is updated to foster greater understanding of interpersonal problems associated with onset, progression, and expression of psychiatric systems while incorporating the specific parameters of parent, child, sibling, extended family, and significant other issues in overall clinical formulation. The new edition delves more deeply into relational and cultural features, family systems assessment, family systems interventions, and ethical and legal implications when working with identified DSM-5-TR disorders. New case conceptualizations address the "new normal" of working in a telehealth environment along with the impact of COVID-19 and racial and social injustice. Every chapter encompasses the latest DSM updates and current literature, and new chapter Test Banks and PowerPoints enhance the instructor resources. With each chapter focusing on a specific diagnosis or category of diagnoses, the book analyzes all DSM-5-TR domains, discusses the impact of diagnoses on the entire family, and introduces various assessments and interventions. New to the Second Edition: Presents relational and cultural features in each chapter Updates case conceptualizations to address emerging trends in telehealth, COVID-19, and social injustice Embodies the latest DSM updates, current literature, and updated research New and updated chapter Test Banks and PowerPoints included in the instructor materials Key Features: Guides the reader in understanding how to best integrate DSM-5-TR diagnoses from a systems perspective Applies systemic considerations to every identified disorder category in the DSM-5-TR Considers ethical and legal implications for each diagnosis Summary, case conceptualization, and discussion questions included in each chapter focusing on a disorder category Includes family systems contexts, assessments, interventions, and cultural considerations

This book contains a compendium of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) articles and reviews concerning state of the art technologies and how they are being applied to human neurodevelopmental disorders. With the establishment of effective technologies to produce iPSCs and their derivatives, like neural precursors, neurons, and glia, researchers have new platforms to study neurodevelopmental disorders. iPSC technology enables researchers to study how human neurons develop in individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders, providing an unparalleled opportunity to investigate their etiology. In turn, researchers have now begun to understand the underlying molecular and cellular pathways that contribute to human diseases. iPSCs technologies also provide an emerging tool for future translational studies and disease classification. The chapters will emphasize how among the diverse idiopathic and genetic disorders, there are common clinical as well as cellular and molecular phenotypes.

From the birth, children grow and learn in response to the stimulation from their social and physical environment. Research on early brain development provides a great opportunity to examine how nature and nurture work together to shape human development. Through the use of sophisticated technology, scientists have discovered how early brain development and nurturing care interact to create a foundation for future growth and learning. New evidence supports the effect of nature-nurture interactions on childhood development primarily through advances in longitudinal studies. Neural processes, influenced by genetic and epigenetic variation, and other underlying factors including environment, infection, inflammation, hormonal and immune functions, etc., have critical roles in brain development. The term "nurturing care" was described as a core component for achieving optimal development in the early years of life, when the brain is developing and the child is more responsive to interventions. Recent evidence has revealed that parenting interventions that include components to enhance child learning or strengthen parent-child relationships are effective for improving early cognitive, language, motor, and socioemotional development. This book aims: (1) to describe various domains of neurodevelopment in children; (2) to report the estimates of children at risk of not achieving their developmental potential; (3) to present a life course conceptual framework of early childhood development; (4) to review new aspects of neurodevelopment in children; eg., neurobiology, neuroimmunology; (5) to describe the risk factors affecting early brain development; (6) to report the neurodevelopment screening tools in children; (7) to assess the role of nurturing care in early brain development; and (8) to describe programs and policies implemented for early childhood development and their effectiveness for improving development in childhood.

In this important 1997 book on the role of neurodevelopmental factors in the pathogenesis of the major psychiatric disorders, the fields of developmental neurobiology, clinical psychiatry and behavioural neuroscience are reviewed by an international group of experts, including many of those responsible for the ideas that have come to dominate current thinking. The first section, 'The Developing Brain', reviews neurodevelopment from the molecular to the behavioural level. Section Two, 'Development and Psychopathology', covers clinical applications of the basic principles of developmental neurobiology. The third and final section, 'Integrative Models', presents approaches toward a synthesis of neurodevelopmental and clinical findings in psychiatric disorder. For students, scientists and clinicians in psychiatry, psychology, and neurodevelopment, this is an essential reference.
