The equation "Mind = Machine" is false. This pocket lexicon of "neuromythology" shows why. Taking a series of key words such as calculation, language, information and memory, Professor Tallis shows how their misuse has a lured a whole generation into accepting the computational model of the mind. First of all these words were used literally in the description of the human mind. Then computer scientists applied them metaphorically to the workings of their machines. And finally, their metaphorical status forgotten, the use of the terms was called as evidence of artificial intelligence in machines and the computational nature of conscious thought.

Clinical Neuromythology written by William Landau and has been published by Blackwell Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-11-28 with Medical categories.

In the second edition of this unique and hugely popular title, William Landau extends his provocative rhetorical critique of the language, logic and epistemology behind contemporary neurology, and by extension, the wider medical profession. Maintaining a razor sharp wit and an emphasis on rigour and clarity over 105 separate editorials, essays and letters, Dr. Landau continues to illustrate the shaky logic, obfuscatory language and mythology which pervades much contemporary "wisdom" about medical practice and discourse. He has produced a volume which advocates a more logical, inquisitive approach which would benefit all students, house officers and fellows in neurology, yet could also aid any medical student or professional keen to understand and challenge popular conventions in thinking and writing about modern medicine. Following the success of the first edition, new material has been added: a new section concerns pain and pain management, addressing the confusion of temperomandibular pain and the efficacy and risk of intraspinal steroid treatment. Discussion of the controversy surrounding treatment for parkinsonism includes the failure of embryonic brain transplantation and the success of electrical brain stimulation. The slippery controversies regarding dietary fat, the obesity epidemic, cholesterol, stroke risk and treatment are also described.

Altered States Of Consciousness written by Marc Wittmann and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-04 with Psychology categories.

A groundbreaking study of what altered states of consciousness—the dissolution of feelings of time and self—can tell us about the mystery of consciousness, perfect for readers interested in psychedelics, brain science, and meditation. During extraordinary moments of consciousness—shock, meditative states and sudden mystical revelations, out-of-body experiences, or drug intoxication—our senses of time and self are altered; we may even feel time and self dissolving. These experiences have long been ignored by mainstream science, or considered crazy fantasies. Recent research, however, has located the neural underpinnings of these altered states of mind. In this book, neuropsychologist Marc Wittmann shows how experiences that disturb or widen our everyday understanding of the self can help solve the mystery of consciousness. Wittmann explains that the relationship between consciousness of time and consciousness of self is close; in extreme circumstances, the experiences of space and self-intensify and weaken together. He considers the emergence of the self in waking life and dreams; how our sense of time is distorted by extreme situations ranging from terror to mystical enlightenment; the experience of the moment; and the loss of time and self in such disorders as depression, schizophrenia, and epilepsy. Dostoyevsky reported godly bliss during epileptic seizures; neurologists are now investigating the phenomenon of the epileptic aura. Wittmann describes new studies of psychedelics that show how the brain builds consciousness of self and time, and discusses pilot programs that use hallucinogens to treat severe depression, anxiety, and addiction. If we want to understand our consciousness, our subjectivity, Wittmann argues, we must not be afraid to break new ground. Studying altered states of consciousness leads us directly to the heart of the matter: time and self, the foundations of consciousness.

To romance: “to tell stories that are not true, or to describe an event in a way that makes it sound better than it was – in this case, more scientific than it is. A myth is not always a fairy story, but most often, the presentation of facts belonging to one category in the idioms appropriate to another. Usually, there is some factual basis for the narrative. This book seeks to expose neuromythology – mythology developed by scientists in their attempts to describe the human mind in material and mechanistic terms.

On The Edge Of Certainty written by Raymond Tallis and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-08-02 with Philosophy categories.

Raymond Tallis's The Explicit Animal (1991) was a passionate attack on attempts to explain human consciousness in purely biological terms. This ground-breaking book defended the distinctive nature of human consciousness against the misrepresentations of those many philosophers and cognitive scientists who aimed to reduce it to a set of functions understood in evolutionary, neurobiological and computational terms. In his laudatory review in The Times Literary Supplement, Stephen Clark expressed the hope that Tallis would continue his explorations. On the Edge of Certainty does precisely that, investigating and clarifying the implications of the highly original view of human nature discussed in his earlier book, in order to understand the nature of truth, of language, of the mind and of the self.

Education And Neuroscience written by Paul Howard-Jones and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-13 with Education categories.

This book brings together contributions from scientists and educators at the forefront of interdisciplinary research efforts involving neuroscience and education. It includes consideration of what we know about brain function that may be relevant to educational areas including reading, mathematics, music and creativity. The increasing interest of educators in neuroscience also brings dangers with it, as evidenced by the proliferation of neuromyths within schools and colleges. For this reason, it also reviews some of the more prominent misconceptions, as well as exploring how educational understanding can be constructed in the future that includes concepts from neuroscience more judiciously. This book will be of interest to educators, policymakers and scientists seeking fresh perspectives on how we learn. This book was published as a special issue in Educational Research, a journal of the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER).
