Neuroscience Perspectives provides multidisciplinary reviews of topics in one of the most diverse and rapidly advancing fields of life sciences. Whether you are a new recruit to neuroscience, or an established expert, look to this series for 'one-stop' sources of the historical, physiological, pharmacological, biochemical, molecular biological and therapeutic aspects of chosen research areas. Polyamines have had a hard time competing for research interest. As anyone who has studied polyamines knows, it is possible to observe some sort of polyamine effects in almost any assay system at high concentrations, and their generality of action has obviously been a deterrent to intensive research. Most of the research is concentrated in the field of cancer and relatively little polyamine research is neuroscience related, although in 1926 spermine (then known as neuridine) was first isolated from brain tissue. Further research revealed the existence of uptake and release mechanisms for brain polyamines, as seen with other substances more commonly accepted as neurotransmitters. Polyamines were also found to lay a regulatory role in cellular calcium homeostasis and to have a metabolism that is deregulated in response to cerebral trauma or ischaemia, and finally to modulate the NMDA receptor. It was this last effect which tipped the balance in favour of intensive research into polyamines in the brain. Despite their ubiquity and demonstrated links with many important physiological regulatory processes, there is no coherent hypothesis to explain their presence or role in cellular physiology. This book does not provide such a hypothesis, but attempts to group the known effects and properties of polyamines as applied to neuroscience and to stimulate interest in this field. The polyamines are deliberately treated as neuromodulators or neurotransmitters with an important and specific function in brain. This assumption is far from proven, but it is hoped that enough interest in this research area will be stimulated which will result in a more precise definition of polyamine function in the future.

The importance of polyamines for all living cells has been recognized since spermine was discovered in human semen more than 300 years ago. Polyamine research intensified when analytical methods were developed for their determination, particularly in tissues and biological fluids. Discovering their close correlation with cancer, and that polyamine concentrations change during the cell cycle, gave reason for further research in this topic. Polyamines in Health and Nutrition concentrates on the direction of polyamine research which has the capacity to influence and benefit our health and which can explain some of the discrepancies and failures of earlier research. It is important to recognize the dietary contribution to the polyamine body pool and to investigate how the polyamine content of the diet can be changed, with the ultimate aim of using this information to improve our health.

The NMDA receptor plays a critical role in the development of the central nervous system and in adult neuroplasticity, learning, and memory. Therefore, it is not surprising that this receptor has been widely studied. However, despite the importance of rhythms for the sustenance of life, this aspect of NMDAR function remains poorly studied. Written

Stress in the DSM is referred to only in the sense of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, some research studies estimate up to two thirds of illnesses seen by general practitioners are ‘stress related’–GI problems, sleep disturbance, mental concentration, headaches, fatigue, shortness of breath, high blood pressure, dermatitis, illnesses from lowered immune system, and vague aches and pains – all can be symptoms and outcomes of the elusive stress factor. This issue of Psychiatric Clinics of North America discusses the scientific medical facets of stress, written by mental health and medical practitioners. It looks at the brain-body connection of stress – what the body does to result in stress and varying results stress has on the body. This fascinating cross-discipline look at stress is intended for psychiatrists, general practitioners, cardiologists, GI specialists, neurologists, sleep medicine specialists, respiratory specialists, and others who diagnose and treat patients with stress suspected as part of the illness equation or with self-reported stress. Topics include: Measurement of stress; Anxiety and stress-how they work together; Relationship between genetics and stress; Role of glia in stress; Sleep and stress; Diet and stress; Supplements and stress; Effect of severe stress on early brain development, attachment, and emotions; Role of stress and fear on the development of psychopathology; Expressions of stress in psychiatric illness; Dermatologic manifestations of stress in normal and psychiatric populations; Humor and the psychological buffers of stress; Stress expression in children and adolescents; Stress in service members; Stress in the geriatric population.

Glutamate is the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain and dysfunction of glutamate transmission is the likely cause of a variety of diseases including neurodegeneration following cerebral ischemia, Huntington's chorea, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, epilepsy, spasticity, emesis, chronic pain, and schizophrenia. Excitatory amino acid receptor agonists and antagonists are therefore of major interest as potential drugs for central nervous system disorders. Excitatory Amino Acids is the first book entirely dedicated to the results of human testing of modulators of excitatory amino acid neurotransmitters. Coverage of the field of excitatory amino acids from synaptic function to preclinical and clinical pharmacology Description of the development of NMDA (Nmethyl-d-aspartate) and non-NMDA antagonists Reports of potential drugs in early and late clinical stages of development

Polyamines written by Tomonobu Kusano and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-07 with Science categories.

This book covers key topics in polyamine research from a range of organisms, including plants, mammals, and prokaryotes such as bacteria and archaea. The book provides an introduction to general concepts in the field of polyamine research, as well as more detailed information. With the availability of genome sequence data from a broad range of organisms, the evolution of the genes involved in polyamine metabolism is discussed. The mode of action of polyamines has been shown to be dependent on cation channels, and this mechanism is described in the book. The origin of polyamine transporters (from bacteria, yeasts, and plants) is described. The various effects of polyamines on growth and survival are also documented. The book details the mechanisms of polyamine homeostasis and the role of polyamine molecules as precursors of secondary metabolites such as plant alkaloids and toxins derived from spiders and wasps. The role of polyamines in longevity and disease is discussed. A link between polyamine contents and cancer progression is reported, as is the use of polyamine metabolites as diagnostic markers in the initial stages of cancer. Moreover, a novel approach that utilizes the polyamine pathway of a parasite as a drug target in African sleeping sickness is described. Therefore, this book is a valuable resource, both as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students and also as a reference book for front-line polyamine researchers.
