Le présent volume, paru en anglais en 1992, constitue l'un des premiers ouvrages de synthèse des recherches de type cognitiviste concernant la schizophrénie. Ces recherches ont pour objectif, selon cet auteur, de rendre compte des symptômes ou manifestations schizophréniques en termes de dysfonctionnements des mécanismes cognitifs sous-jacents, ces derniers étant conçus comme processus de traitement de l'information. En prenant pour fil conducteur les principales classes de symptômes schizophréniques, C. Frith présente de nombreux travaux expérimentaux évaluant les performances cognitives des schizophrènes, et il discute les modèles cognitifs actuellement proposés pour rendre compte de ces différentes classes de symptômes et de ces données expérimentales. Outre ce souci de synthèse, l'auteur expose dans cet ouvrage son propre modèle explicatif des manifestations schizophréniques, modèle fondé sur l'hypothèse d'une altération des processus impliqués dans l'initiation de l'action, responsable de la symptomatologie négative, et d'une atteinte des processus assurant le contrôle de l'action (au sens de la prise de conscience et de la maîtrise de l'action), responsable, en partie au moins, de la symptomatologie positive de la schizophrénie. Cette hypothèse privilégiant le versant de la motricité pour rendre compte des troubles schizophréniques connaît aujourd'hui de nombreux développements ; l'ouvrage de Frith n'en demeure pas moins un des premiers à exploiter cette hypothèse de façon systématique, et il marque à ce titre l'histoire de la recherche dans ce domaine. Si le projet cognitiviste se limite à modéliser les dysfonctionnements sous-jacents aux manifestations pathologiques, il n'a en tant que tel pas de prétention étiopathogénique. L'approche présentée dans cet ouvrage va au-delà de ce projet, dès lors qu'elle cherche à rapporter les dysfonctionnements invoqués à des structures cérébrales, comme l'indique le titre de l'ouvrage : Neuropsychologie cognitive de la schizophrénie.

Der vorliegende Band beschreibt anschaulich und systematisch, mit welchen kognitiven Leistungsminderungen bei Personen mit schizophrenen Störungen in verschiedenen Erkrankungsstadien gerechnet werden muss und wie diese neuropsychologischen Störungen im Kontext neurobiologischer und psychologischer Erklärungsmodelle der Schizophrenie verstanden werden können.
