This volume collects together the Proceedings of the Tenth International Symposium on Neurosecretion which was held in Bristol in September 1987. This series of symposia began with a meeting in Naples in 1953 and it was particularly gratifying to welcome two members of that original gathering, Berta Scharrer and Ellen Thomsen, to the 10th Symposium. The acceptance of the invitation to meet in Bristol gave particular pleasure to the Local Organising Committee because it was the first time that a former venue was revisited - the 3rd Symposium was organised in Bristol by Hans Heller in 1961 and we were very glad that his widow, Josephine, was able to be the Guest-of-Honour at the banquet of our 10th symposium. Neurosecretion has diversified considerably since the first meeting in 1953. From the outset, the local committee decided to focus the meeting by organising it under the title "Cellular aspects of the production and release of neuropeptides. " Having sought advice from the International Committee for Symposia on Neurosecretion, we invited 28 scientists from throughout the world to present their work on aspects ranging from the organisation of the gene through to the electrical properties of peptide-secreting neurones. The progress of studies in neurosecretion owes much to the comparative approach and we attempted to reflect this in the programme of the tenth symposium by inviting the speakers, to illustrate the various aspects of neuropeptide secretion, from among scientists working with systems in many parts of the animal kingdom.

Neurochemistry, having the objective of elucidating biochemical processes subserving nervous activity, emerged as an application of chemistry to the of neurobiological problems as a post-World War II phenomenon. investigation However, only in the last 40 years has the chemical community recognized neurochemistry as a distinct, if hybrid, discipline. During this period great strides have been made. However, recently neurochemistry, along with neu rophysiology, neuropharmacology, neuroanatomy, and the behavioral sci ences, has emerged to form neuroscience, a new community of scientists with its own national society, journals, and meetings. Actually, this recently formed hybrid, neuroscience, is in the process of merging with another well-established discipline, molecular genetics (frequently called molecular biology, and itself a hybrid), which appears to have sufficient hybrid vigor to form yet a new community of scientists, which, for want of a more imaginative term, has been called molecular genetic neuroscience. Clearly, advantages resulting from such mergers or hybridizations accrue not only from the merging discipline (neurochemistry in this case) to the new community (molecular genetic neuroscience), but also in the reverse direction. This Foreword will be concerned primarily with examples of this latter process.

The role of electrical signalling in the control of endocrine secretions by the brain has been clear for many years. Recently, the influences of hormones on synthetic events in neuroendocrine cells have raised new questions concerning the peptides released from such neurons. This volume concentrates on the relation between these two fields and asks how electrical action potentials facilitate secretion of substances from nerve cells which control endocrine events. While stimulus-secretion coupling has been studied extensively in other physiological contexts, this is the first treatment of the phenomenon in an exclusively neuroendocrine setting.

We had the pleasure and the great opportunity to organize a symposium on "Molecular Biology of Brain and Endocrine Peptidergic Systems" under the auspices of the Canadian Biochemical society and the International Foundation for Biochemical Endocrinology. We were indeed very happy to ass~ble a series of first rate speakers who delivered excellent papers on a variety of subjects from the synthesis of complicated peptide analogs, to the creation of trangenic mice, site-directed mutagenesis, enzyme characterization and DNA binding sites. One hundred and seventy-five participants attended the 40 conferences while having the opportunity to look at 24 posters presented by senior scientists as well as students. We, of the organizing committee, feel extremely pleased to have received an overwhelming response from such a group of scholars. We wish to express our sincere gratitude to Mrs. Diane Marcil who arranged most aspects of the meeting with efficiency. We also thank the different organizations and companies for their generous grants which made the reunion possible. We hope that the participants have gained scientifically while having a pleasant sojourn in beautiful Montreal. The organizing committee was made up of a group of dedicated people, particularly its secretary, Dr. Philippe Crine. To all speakers and sessions chairpersons, we are indebted for the excellence of their participation.

The Biology Of Crustacea written by Bozzano G Luisa and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-02 with Science categories.

The Biology of Crustacea, Volume 3: Neurobiology: Structure and Function focuses on fundamental aspects of crustacean neurobiology, from the organization of the central nervous system (CNS) and neuromuscular systems to synapses and neurotransmitters, nerve and muscle, hormones and neurosecretion, photoreception, chemoreception and thermoreception, and mechanoreception. It also looks at systematics, phylogeny, biogeography, embryology, genetics, ecology, behavior, pathobiology, comparative morphology, growth, and sex determination of crustaceans. Organized into nine chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the crustacean CNS, with emphasis on neural organization of the brain as well as neural organization in the optic lobes and in the thoracic and abdominal ganglia. It then discusses the organization and components of neuromuscular systems, mechanisms of release of neurotransmitters at synapses, morphology and excitation-contraction coupling in muscle, and development of nerve, muscle, neuromuscular synapses, and neural circuits. It explains the neural control of neurosecretion in crustaceans, anatomy of photoreceptors and accessory structures in the compound eye, and chemosensory organization. The book concludes with a chapter on crustacean mechanoreceptors and their evolution. This book will be of interest to zoologists, paleontologists, ecologists, physiologists, endocrinologists, morphologists, pathologists, biologists, and other scientists engaged in basic or applied research on various aspects of crustacean biology.
