Since the discovery that neuronal transmission can be chemically mediated, a large number of compounds have been found in the mammalian central nervous system which appear to function as neurotransmitter agents. Recently, electro physiological and biochemical methods have been developed which have enabled neuroscientists to classify better the myriad of neurotransmitter receptor sites in brain and to study their properties in finer detail. As a result of these investigations, a significant number of new discoveries have been made about the mechanisms involved in neurotransmitter receptor interactions, the role neurotransmitters play in the actions of pharmacological agents and in the pathogenesis of various neuropsychiatric disorders. The present two volume text was compiled to summarize the information relating to the physiological, biochemical, pharmacological and functional characteristics of neurotransmitter receptor sites. While emphasis is placed on neurotransmitter receptors in the mammalian central nervous system, the characteristics of these receptors in other species, both vertebrate and invertebrate, are also discussed where appropriate. While these books cover the major classes of putative neurotransmitters - amino acids, peptides and biogenic amines - and are therefore broad in scope, each is discussed in a concise fashion to highlight the major points of historical and contemporary interest. In addition to outlining data, each chapter addresses current theories relating to the various aspects of receptor properties and function in an attempt to reveal the directions of future research and as a stimulus for other workers in the field.

This meeting was held commemorating Dr. Kito's 10th Anniversary as Professor of the Third Department of Internal Medicine, Hiroshima University School of Medicine. Dr. Kito was born in 1927 in Nagoya, graduated from Tokyo University School of Medicine and received his M. D. in 1951. He spent his first academic years as a research associate (1952 - 1968) at the Third Department of Internal Medi cine, Tokyo University School of Medicine. During this period he studied for one year (1952 - 1953) at Illinois University School of Medicine, and acquired his Ph. D. in 1959. In 1968 he became Instructor and in 1971 he was appointed as Assistant Professor of Tokyo Women's Medical College. In 1973, he became Professor of the Third Department of Internal Medicine, Hiroshima University School of Medicine. Dr. Kito is a clinician but he is always enthusiastic about basic medicine. His major research field concerns neurotrans mitters and their receptors in the central nervous system. He prefers a combination of neurotransmitter immunohistochemistry and receptor autoradiography as research techniques. He is also engaged in biochemical studies on amyloid proteins. When the Eighth Inter national Congress of Pharmacology was held in Tokyo in 1981, Dr. Segawa, Dr. Yamamura, and Dr. Kuriyama organized a Satellite Symposium on Neurotransmitter Receptors in Hiroshima. Since the first Hiroshima Symposium of Neurotransmitter Receptors in 1983, there have been conspicuous advances in this field. For instance, our knowledge on transmembrane signalling mechanism has increased almost exponentially and this great stride has been linking areas of biology that had been previously considered of as being separate. The Second Hiroshima International Neurotransmitter Receptor Symposium was held on October 6 to 9 bringing together an outstanding group of neuroscientists from various disciplines to integrate these advances in the hope that their valuable contributions will make this meeting a tradition in this city. The original title of the Symposium was "Receptor Mechanism of Neurotransmitter and Neuropeptides". This volume is based on papers presented at this Second Hiroshima Symposium.
