When you embark on a trip that takes you far away from the comforts of your home-whether it's to an exotic location situated halfway around the world or a tiny town across the closest state line-a mixture of excitement, anxiety, and eager anticipation accompanies you on your journey. Arriving at your destination, you encounter a wide array of unfamiliar faces waiting to make your acquaintance and geographical locations you have been longing to discover. When the time comes to explore the uncharted territory that lies before you, what determines the way you react to your surroundings and how you interact with the people who call such places home? In her compilation of thirteen travel essays, author R. A. Voss sheds lights on the pivotal role our upbringing and past experiences play in our response to new cities, countries, and foreign cultures. Although many of the essays detail events that occurred on journeys taken to faraway lands-Japan, Germany, Israel-all of the pieces that comprise the collection hearken back to the author's personal history and the way her childhood in Iowa continues to influence her perception of the places she visits today. Using her experiences in her hometown as well as foreign lands across the globe as a guide, Voss touches on topics that range from issues society faces in the twenty-first century-such as equal rights and environmental sustainability-to her own attempts to trace her family's ancestry and discover her heritage. As she recalls the places she has visited and the people with whom she has interacted, Voss shares with readers that every individual we encounter is kept in our consciousness forever and shapes our future viewpoints and perceptions. Because we carry these experiences and interactions with us wherever our journeys ultimately take us, we never travel anywhere on this earth alone.

My favorite travel quote is: "One of life's most beautiful ironies is we often travel to lose ourselves but end up finding ourselves." So simple yet so profound! We often travel alone to seek an escape from our world, and then end up discovering things within us that we never knew existed. Solo travel unveils your true character like few other things. Left on a solitary adventure in an unknown land with unknown people, you learn to navigate life's most vital survival skills. You develop the art of negotiating, communicating with people from different cultures and surviving in unknown terrains. Your first solo trip can be a highly spiritual and life-changing experience. It has the potential to transform you from an inhibited and unsure person to a self-assured and confident one. Coming back safely from a solo trip gives you the confidence that you can look after your own health, safety, money, and essentials. You realize you are independent and can look after your interests. The idea that you've survived in destinations unknown and unfamiliar to you give an unmatched confidence boost. If you're on the fence about a solo trip, I'd say go for it! Life will never be the same again. The perspective with which you'll view yourself and people around you will change forever. Take in new experiences, enjoy new surroundings and cultures, eliminate prejudices, and adapt to the preferences of locals or traveling companions. Solo travel gives you an opportunity to indulge and discover yourself... John Eastman

Never Alone shares Cassidy B.s story of addiction and salvation written in verse form. Her poetry explores the challenges that many addicts face. Most reach a turning point at which only they can answer the question of whether or not they suffer from the disease of addiction. It may take months or even years to come to this self-realization, and during that time the tumultuous disease of addiction can destroy families, loved ones, and individuals, affecting many more people who live and work around the addict as well. Even so, from the lowest of lows, it is possible to create miracles in our lives through the process of recovery. Through her poetry, Cassidy B. expresses the loneliness and despair of an addicts life and the light of recovery that only few are able to experience. Never Alone illustrates the roller coaster of emotions that many must face if they stay long enough to experience the gifts and beauty that can be achieved through willingness to change their lives.

One of the things I learned on this thousand-mile walk is I am only vulnerable when I hide and, I hide when I feel threatened, not up to the challenge, or I am ashamed about something. Also, I realized as humans, most of us are always host to at least one if not all three conditions that invest heavily in our sense of guilt, shame and fear. These conditions exist greatly because of the ill will that we have projected and invested in the image of our own creation, not understanding the power we put into such an investment, nor do many of us have the spiritual understanding of the spoken and unspoken word, and its internal and external power over our thought processes as well as our behavior. On the other hand, I believe with positivism one can disinvest in all ones negativity. One cannot do harm to ones neighbor without doing harm to ones own character, self-esteem, emotional and mental stability; ones own sense of self is diminished. Let us step out of fear and free the heart; free the heart and step into the power of ones eternal-self and you are, once again, walking in humanity, in spirit, reflecting the loving image of Spirit, not the confusion we have placed upon such a concept.

"We never travel alone. On every journey, we are accompanied and strengthened by all the people, places and events we've encountered before--whose images echo across time. With that in mind, this collection of travel essays features episodes in my past that influence the person I am today. Every excursion begins at home, and while our ties with home may loosen over time, they never come entirely undone. Thomas Wolfe notes in his novel You Can't Go Home Again, that one cannot go "[] back home to places in the country, back home to old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time []." Yet, our notions about home, gleaned from our personal histories, reverberate inside our current consciousness and shape who we are on the road. ..." -- from Introduction.
