"'I been hungry all my life, all the time,' he told himself, 'I never get my teeth into anythin' all my own.' Too hungry for the arid place he'd been born in.... A hunger that might, wolflike, lie sleeping for an hour or a day. Or else waken and keep a man in trouble the rest of his life...." This is the story of Bruno "Lefty" Bicek -- raised in the dark shadow of the Division Street El, deep in the Chicago slums -- of Lefty's girl, Steffi, and of his gang. It is the story of a struggle -- struggle to climb out of the slums, to appease the hunger, to make a name that would bring some kind of glory. In the classic American realist tradition, Nelson Algren has created a novel that vibrates with the life of Chicago, the teeming Polish slums, the boxing rings, the brothels, and the jails -- and those like Lefty Bicek and his Steffie who people this world.

Nelson Algren written by Robert Ward and has been published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Literary Collections categories.

This collection of eleven essays on Algren's major work offers a diverse and lively range of theoretical and historical readings. These include discussions of Algren's place in Chicago's left-wing literary tradition, the aesthetic of American and European naturalism, and his reaction to, and reception in, the Cold War milieu of the 1940s and 1950s. Consideration is also given to the ways in which paperback cover designs shaped the reception of Algren's novels as pulp fiction. Algren's works are further illuminated by the theories of Walter Benjamin, and those associated with confinement, autobiography, post-colonialism, and the cultural politics of American carnival. The volume is supplemented by a piece that traces the birth and growth of the Algren archive at Ohio State University. Robert Ward lectures in American Literature at St. Martin's College, Lancaster.

Dove Findhorn is a naïve country boy who busts out of Hicksville, Texas in pursuit of a better life in New Orleans. Amongst the downtrodden prostitutes, bootleggers and hustlers of the old French Quarter, Dove finds only hopelessness, crime and despair. His quest uncovers a harrowing grotesque of the American Dream. A Walk in the Wild Side is an angry, lonely, large-hearted and often funny masterpiece that has captured the imaginations of every generation since its first publication in 1956, and that rendered a world later immortalised in Lou Reed ́s classic song.

There are no second chances—or are there? Krista Mueller is in a good place. She has a successful career as a professor of history; she’s respected and well-liked; and she lives hundreds of miles from her hometown and the distant mother she could never please. It’s been more than a decade since Alzheimer’s disease first claimed Charlotte Mueller’s mind, but Krista has dutifully kept her mother in a first-class nursing home. Now Charlotte is dying of heart failure and, surprised by her own emotions, Krista rushes to Taos, New Mexico, to sit at her estranged mother’s side as she slips away. Battling feelings of loss, abandonment, and relief, Krista is also unsettled by her proximity to Dane McConnell, director of the nursing home—and, once upon a time, her first love. Dane’s kind and gentle spirit—and a surprising discovery about her mother—make Krista wonder if she can at last close the distance between her and her mother … and open the part of her heart she thought was lost forever. “A timeless tale, to be kept every day in the heart as a reminder that forgiveness is a gift to self.” —PATRICIA HICKMAN, author of The Pirate Queen Previously released as Christmas Every Morning
