This book is a unique, long-needed comprehensive study of whole-discourse form going beyond traditional prescriptions. Ancient and contemporary innovations are combined with a new theory and practical application. The author rescues the organization of persuasive/explanatory prose from long neglect and unimaginative traditional formulas. She demonstrates a new theory of form fluency in analyses of student texts and applies it in new 'form heuristics' that go beyond outlining. The main audience for this book will be professors and graduate students in the growing discipline of rhetoric/composition, or any teacher or writer interested in new ideas about organizing discourse.

New Approaches to Rhetoric provides fresh perspectives on the study of rhetoric and its ability to affect change in today′s society. Although traditional approaches (e.g., neo-Aristotelian) to the study of rhetoric have utility for the twenty-first century, communication in a complex, mass-mediated postmodern age calls for new critical approaches. The contributors of this volume, including James Darsey, Kathryn M. Olson and G. Thomas Goodnight, George Cheney, Dana Cloud, and Barry Brummett, explore possibilities for bridging rhetorical studies of the past with rhetorical studies of the future. The original essays invite students to join rhetorical theorists and critics in an ongoing dialogue concerning what it means to study communication in a postmodern world. Divided into three Parts, New Approaches to Rhetoric challenges and expands the definitions, approaches, and assumptions governing rhetorical scholarship. Part I, Rhetorics, Ethics, and Values, addresses, in different ways, a central question for the study of rhetoric today: How, and under what conditions, will moral arguments be articulated in the 21st century? Part II, Rhetoric, Institutions, and Contexts, features real-life case studies, showing students the function of rhetoric in today′s world. Part III, Rhetorics, Cultures, and Ideologies, encourages students to examine ideological approaches to criticism and issues associated with class, race, and gender. Features of this volume: Original, never-before-published pieces by leading rhetorical theorists and critics including James Darsey, Kathryn Olson and G. Thomas Goodnight, George Cheney, Dana Cloud and Marouf Hasian, and John M. Murphy and Thomas R. Burkholder, among others Each part opens with a brief introduction to frame discussion for students. Topics and case studies will appeal to students and scholars (e.g., film, Disney, political keynote addresses, autobiography, labor union discourse). Barry Brummett′s Conclusion speculates on what the collection suggests about rhetoric in the 21st century and offers ideas to guide students as they contemplate the future of rhetorical studies. New Approaches to Rhetoric is ideal for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in Rhetoric and in Political Communication in departments of Communication, English, and Political Science. This book is suitable for use as either a primary or supplemental course text and will be invaluable as a general reference for scholars of rhetoric, social movements, and public sphere studies.

Parables And Rhetoric In The Sermon On The Mount written by Ernst Baasland and has been published by Mohr Siebeck this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-27 with Religion categories.

"Parable research has to a large degree ignored the Sermon on the Mount (SM) and for its part, research into the SM has likewise left the parables by the wayside. However, the use of parabolic language in more than one third of the SM influences its interpretation and indeed opens up a new approach to it. In the current volume, Ernst Baasland focuses on this important factor, whilst also taking the rhetoric of Jesus' teaching into consideration. The author maintains that rhetorical features have a great bearing on the interpretation of the text with the overall structure illuminating the entire composition of the sermon. Fresh insights into its oration therefore serve to challenge the source problem in a new way. The religious and philosophical settings of this most well-known of Christ's preachings are clarified by its parables and rhetoric; and the sermon's Jewish background has often been investigated. While the author continues with that particular task, he simultaneously affords more emphasis to the parallels in (Greek) Hellenistic literature. The combining of all these factors leads to a clearer comprehension of the Sermon on the Mount's philosophy of life and provides a better understanding of this classical text"--

Still Life With Rhetoric written by Laurie Gries and has been published by University Press of Colorado this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-01 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Winner of the 2016 CCCC Advancement of Knowledge Award and the 2016 CCCC Research Impact Award In Still Life with Rhetoric, Laurie Gries forges connections among new materialism, actor network theory, and rhetoric to explore how images become rhetorically active in a digitally networked, global environment. Rather than study how an already-materialized “visual text” functions within a specific context, Gries investigates how images often circulate and transform across media, genre, and location at viral rates. A four-part case study of Shepard Fairey’s now iconic Obama Hope image elucidates how images reassemble collective life as they actualize in different versions, enter into various relations, and spark a firework of activity across the globe. While intent on tracking the rhetorical life of a single, multiple image, Still Life with Rhetoric is most concerned with studying rhetoric in motion. To account for an image’s widespread circulation and emergent activities, Gries introduces iconographic tracking—a digital research method for tracing an image’s divergent rhetorical becomings. Yet Gries also articulates a dynamic set of theoretical principles for studying rhetoric as a distributed, generative, and unforeseeable event that is applicable beyond the study of visual rhetoric. With an eye toward futurity—the strands of time beyond a thing’s initial moment of production and delivery—Still Life with Rhetoric intends to be taken up by those interested in visual rhetoric, research methods, and theory.
