During the days 14-18 of October 1991, we had the pleasure of attending a most interesting Conference on New Developments in Partial Differential Equations and Applications to Mathematical Physics in Ferrarra. The Conference was organized within the Scientific Program celebrating the six hundredth birthday of the University of Ferrarra and, after the many stimulating lectures and fruitful discussions, we may certainly conclude, together with the numerous participants, that it has represented a big success. The Conference would not have been possible without the financial support of several sources. In this respect, we are particularly grateful to the Comitato Organizzatore del VI Centenario, the University of Ferrarra in the Office of the Rector, Professor Antonio Rossi, the Consiglio Nationale delle Ricerche, and the Department of Mathematics of the University of Ferrarra. We should like to thank all of the partlClpants and the speakers, and we are especially grateful to those who have contributed to the present volume. G. Buttazzo, University of Pisa G.P. This reprint volume focuses on recent developments in knot theory arising from mathematical physics, especially solvable lattice models, Yang-Baxter equation, quantum group and two dimensional conformal field theory. This volume is helpful to topologists and mathematical physicists because existing articles are scattered in journals of many different domains including Mathematics and Physics. This volume will give an excellent perspective on these new developments in Topology inspired by mathematical physics.

This book explores the rich and deep interplay between mathematics and physics one century after David Hilbert’s works from 1891 to 1933, published by Springer in six volumes. The most prominent scientists in various domains of these disciplines contribute to this volume providing insight to their works, and analyzing the impact of the breakthrough and the perspectives of their own contributions. The result is a broad journey through the most recent developments in mathematical physics, such as string theory, quantum gravity, noncommutative geometry, twistor theory, Gauge and Quantum fields theories, just to mention a few. The reader, accompanied on this journey by some of the fathers of these theories, explores some far reaching interfaces where mathematics and theoretical physics interact profoundly and gets a broad and deep understanding of subjects which are at the core of recent developments in mathematical physics. The journey is not confined to the present state of the art, but sheds light on future developments of the field, highlighting a list of open problems. Graduate students and researchers working in physics, mathematics and mathematical physics will find this journey extremely fascinating. All those who want to benefit from a comprehensive description of all the latest advances in mathematics and mathematical physics, will find this book very useful too.

Mathematical physics has made enormous strides over the past few decades, with the emergence of many new disciplines and with revolutionary advances in old disciplines. One of the especially interesting features is the link between developments in mathematical physics and in pure mathematics. Many of the exciting advances in mathematics owe their origin to mathematical physics — superstring theory, for example, has led to remarkable progress in geometry — while very pure mathematics, such as number theory, has found unexpected applications. The beginning of a new millennium is an appropriate time to survey the present state of the field and look forward to likely advances in the future. In this book, leading experts give personal views on their subjects and on the wider field of mathematical physics. The topics covered range widely over the whole field, from quantum field theory to turbulence, from the classical three-body problem to non-equilibrium statistical mechanics.
