Advances In Arterial Stiffness Research written by Becky Chavez and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Medical categories.

This book provides current research advances on arterial stiffness. Chapter One addresses the pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) and total pulmonary vascular capacitance (Cp) product of the pulmonary circulation as a global estimate of right ventricular (RV) afterload, the assessment of the local arterial stiffness indices and its relationship with PVR and Cp, and finally, reviews the cause-effect relationships between large/conduit stiffening and distal/resistive vascular disease. Chapter Two discusses local and regional arterial stiffness measurement in clinical practice. Chapter Three reviews the processes involved in the pathogenesis of arterial stiffness in COPD, and the possible role of COPD therapy in vascular alterations. Chapter Four reviews links between bone turnover, vascular calcifications and arterial stiffness. Chapter Five examines ambulatory arterial stiffness index during pregnancy in Type 1 diabetes mellitus. Chapter Six provides a review on the pulse wave velocity and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients on renal replacement therapy. Chapter Seven focuses on the higher arterial stiffness related to blood pressure overresponse to arm and leg resistance exercises in elderly individuals.

Resistance arteries have been recognized for some time as key factors in the regulation of vascular flow resistance, where they determine the regional and local distribution of blood and arterial pressure. Chapters provide an overview of the physiological, biochemical, and electrophysiological characteristics of these vessels, as well as a critical evaluation of the methodologies for studying small arteries and an examination of the membrane and neural mechanisms involved in the control of vascular tone.

This book offers an extensive review of the most recent data on the pathophysiological role of structural and functional alterations in the microcirculation, particularly focusing on hypertension and diabetes. It covers several relevant and innovative aspects, including the possible mechanisms involved in the development of microvascular remodeling and rarefaction, the technical approaches available for the detection of microvascular alterations, including non-invasive evaluations, the prognostic role of changes in small resistance artery structure, the possibility of preventing or regressing such alterations with appropriate treatment, and the potential clinical advantages of such intervention. A number of innovative areas of research are considered, including the role of the immune system, inflammation and oxidative stress in the development of microvascular alterations. Lastly, it examines the availability of recent non-invasive methods for the evaluation of small resistance artery morphology in the retina, which in the near future may provide a useful tool for the stratification of cardiovascular risk and even for clinical decisions regarding drug treatment, thus providing physicians with a clinically relevant instrument for improving and optimizing the management of hypertensive and diabetic patients. The book provides valuable, clinically relevant information for specialists (cardiology, internal medicine, and endocrinology) and general practitioners, and also offers novel and stimulating data to basic and clinical researchers.

Type 2 diabetes "mellitus" affects nearly 120 million persons worldwide- and according to the World Health Organization this number is expected to double by the year 2030. Owing to a rapidly increasing disease prevalence, the medical, social and economic burdens associated with the microvascular and macrovascular complications of type 2 diabetes are likely to increase dramatically in the coming decades. In this volume, leading contributors to the field review the pathogenesis, treatment and management of type 2 diabetes and its complications. They provide invaluable insight and share their discoveries about potentially important new techniques for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diabetic complications.

Written by established researchers, this two-volume publication provides timely, comprehensive and insightful reviews on recent discoveries in the etiology of hypertension. Structural changes of the blood vessels in hypertension in relation to connective tissue, cerebral vessel structure and innervation, smooth muscle cell hypertrophy and/or hyperplasia, and rarefaction of microvessels are discussed. Also presented are the effects of antihypertensive therapy on vessel structure and function. A unique feature is the inclusion of a chapter on pulmonary vascular changes in pulmonary hypertension, which shows certain changes that are similar to systemic hypertension. This book is of major interest to researchers involved in the study of hypertension and the biology of the blood vessels.
