Dynamical systems is an area of intense research activity and one which finds application in many other areas of mathematics. This volume comprises a collection of survey articles that review several different areas of research. Each paper is intended to provide both an overview of a specific area and an introduction to new ideas and techniques. The authors have been encouraged to include a selection of open questions as a spur to further research. Topics covered include global bifurcations in chaotic o.d.e.s, knotted orbits in differential equations, bifurcations with symmetry, renormalization and universality, and one-dimensional dynamics. Articles include comprehensive lists of references to the research literature and consequently the volume will provide an excellent guide to dynamical systems research for graduate students coming to the subject and for research mathematicians.

This volume contains contributed papers authored by participants of a Conference on Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems which was held at the Instituto Superior Tecnico (Lisbon, Portugal). The conference brought together a large number of specialists in the area of differential equations and dynamical systems and provided an opportunity to celebrate Professor Waldyr Oliva's 70th birthday, honoring his fundamental contributions to the field. The volume constitutes anoverview of the current research over a wide range of topics, extending from qualitative theory for (ordinary, partial or functional) differential equations to hyperbolic dynamics and ergodic theory.

The last few years have seen a number of major developments demonstrating that the long-term behavior of solutions of a very large class of partial differential equations possesses a striking resemblance to the behavior of solutions of finite dimensional dynamical systems, or ordinary differential equations. The first of these advances was the discovery that a dissipative PDE has a compact, global attractor with finite Hausdorff and fractal dimensions. More recently, it was shown that some of these PDEs possess a finite dimensional inertial manifold-that is, an invariant manifold containing the attractor and exponentially attractive trajectories. With the improved understanding of the exact connection between finite dimensional dynamical systems and various classes of dissipative PDEs, it is now realistic to hope that the wealth of studies of such topics as bifurcations of finite vector fields and ``strange'' fractal attractors can be brought to bear on various mathematical models, including continuum flows. Surprisingly, a number of distributed systems from continuum mechanics have been found to exhibit the same nontrivial dynamic behavior as observed in low-dimensional dynamical systems. As a natural consequence of these observations, a new direction of research has arisen: detection and analysis of finite dimensional dynamical characteristics of infinite-dimensional systems. This book represents the proceedings of an AMS-IMS-SIAM Summer Research Conference, held in July, 1987 at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Bringing together mathematicians and physicists, the conference provided a forum for presentations on the latest developments in the field and fostered lively interactions on open questions and future directions. With contributions from some of the top experts, these proceedings will provide readers with an overview of this vital area of research.

Ordinary Differential Equations And Dynamical Systems written by Thomas C. Sideris and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-17 with Mathematics categories.

This book is a mathematically rigorous introduction to the beautiful subject of ordinary differential equations for beginning graduate or advanced undergraduate students. Students should have a solid background in analysis and linear algebra. The presentation emphasizes commonly used techniques without necessarily striving for completeness or for the treatment of a large number of topics. The first half of the book is devoted to the development of the basic theory: linear systems, existence and uniqueness of solutions to the initial value problem, flows, stability, and smooth dependence of solutions upon initial conditions and parameters. Much of this theory also serves as the paradigm for evolutionary partial differential equations. The second half of the book is devoted to geometric theory: topological conjugacy, invariant manifolds, existence and stability of periodic solutions, bifurcations, normal forms, and the existence of transverse homoclinic points and their link to chaotic dynamics. A common thread throughout the second part is the use of the implicit function theorem in Banach space. Chapter 5, devoted to this topic, the serves as the bridge between the two halves of the book.
