The new-media revolution has led to a comprehensive digitization of our textual universe and the pervasive incorporation of the media into our everyday lives (from mobile telephony to social media). This calls for a concerted research effort uniting linguistics and other disciplines involved in language-related research. The massive growth in the amount, diversity and availability of textual and multimodal language data for many of the world's languages poses several challenges. In terms of theory and methods, it forces us to rethink traditional notions of what linguistic corpora are and what role they play in linguistic description. Established corpus-linguistic methods such as concordancing and textual statistics are increasingly being complemented by visualization and geolocation of digital language data. Empirically, there is a growing need to document and analyse what people do with language in the increasingly technologized communicative ecology of the 21st century. Language and Computers - Studies in Digital Linguistics invites contributions which - explore innovative, intelligent and creative ways of using digital language data, resources and infrastructure for linguistic description - contribute to the development and refinement of usage-based models in linguistics, using both quantitative and qualitative methods - analyse all aspects of digitally mediated communication, from orthography to pragmatics and sociolinguistics.

The first section is concerned with studies of the history and development of morphological and syntactic phenomena in English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. The second section contains case studies investigating the functions and contexts of use of different morphological and syntactic forms in English, Spanish, Russian, and Mandarin Chinese. The third section contains studies in the field of genre and register from settings as diverse as health, call center, academic, and legal discourse. The final section features papers refining existing, and exploring new, corpus-linguistic methods: dispersions, text mining, corpus similarity, as well as the development of extraction patterns and the evaluation of tagging methods.

Based on a corpus of private email from Jamaican university students, this study explores the discourse functions of Jamaican Creole in computer-mediated communication. From this participant-centered perspective, it contributes to the longstanding theoretical debates in Creole studies about the 'Creole continuum'. This book will likewise be useful to researchers of computer-mediated communication, the use and development of non-standardized languages, language ecology, and code switching. The central methodological issue in this study is code switching in a written medium, a neglected area of study at the moment since most literature in code switching research is based on spoken data. The three analytical chapters present the data in a critical discussion of established and more recent theoretical approaches to code switching research. The fields of research that will benefit from this book include pragmatics and discourse analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, Creole studies, English as a world language, the study of language in computer-mediated communication, and linguistic anthropology.
