Originally published in 2003, Critical Visions develops a wide-ranging analysis of key issues and debates in contemporary social theory. Drawing social theory, cultural studies, and psychoanalysis together in a bold configuration, the book challenges the widespread view that social theory seems to have lost its way as a result of the diversification of conceptual approaches. The book includes critical readings of the terrain of contemporary social theory and theorists. Questions relating to the globalization of risk, citizenship, morality and ethics, politics and norms, and sexuality and desire are all explored.

"This book contributes to the growing debates about social theory and its role through a discussion of the ways in which gender and race contributed to the exclusion of important thinkers from the sociological canon." - John Hughes, Lancaster University Who makes up the ′canon′ of sociology - and who doesn′t? Does sociology need a canon in the first place? Beyond Social Theory offers an innovative and passionate contribution to debates on the history and development of sociology and the exclusion of theorists - who are female, black, or both - from the mainstream of social theorizing. With compelling biographical sketches bringing the dynamics behind the ′canon′ to life, Kate Reed focuses sharp analysis on the exclusion of theorists on race and gender from important debates on inequality. An important contribution to the debate on non-exclusionary theory, this book critically examines existing accounts of the history of the discipline, situating the development of social theory within a wider social and political context.

Written by eminent sociologists, this book introduces and assesses some of the most influential, recent sociological theories. Each chapter explains the theory and describes a related program of empirical research. Chapters are authored by the actual founders (and/or leading exponents) of these theoretical programs; many chapters contain a description of the inception, growth, and present status of the theoretical program. The book covers a broad range of sociological concerns, from the investigation of power and status processes, to social movements and revolutions, to organizational and institutional structures, to world system analysis. Accessibly written for a wide sociological audience, this book is an invaluable introduction for undergraduates and graduates to sociology's most important theoretical advances.

This book breaks important new ground, making important connections between the major lines of social thought. The authors have drawn strongly, not only on the works of positivists, but also the ideas of: sociologists of knowledge, the Frankfurt School, Marxists, ethnomethodologists, postmodernists, and cultural theorists. The five perspectives discussed contain several points of disagreement with positivism. Throughout, the book concentrates on the crucial epistemological problem of the relation between sociological theory and the object to which it addresses itself. Its emphasis is on the method and theory in contemporary research and how this reflects movement throughout the sociological spectrum. It debates the approach which developed from the positivist tradition with its emphasis on causality. Further weaknesses of the positivist tradition are highlighted and new insight is considered, brought by sociologists of knowledge and phenomenological perspectives in relation to research practice. The book stimulates dialogue for a new approach to current sociological theory. Further, a myriad of prominent sociological theories are discussed, which raise concerns for issues related to gender and new social movements. It is undoubtedly a new and stimulating approach to current sociological theory.

Phenomenological sociology and ethnomethodolgy are two new and significant developments in modern sociological theory. Traditional sociology takes for granted that the social world has an objective existence; it does not query the commonsense assumptions that are grounded in experience. Ethnomethodological studies, on the other hand, seek to treat practical activities, practical circumstances, and practical sociological reasoning as topics of empirical study. By paying to the most commonplace activities of daily life the attention usually accorded extraordinary events, it seeks to learn about them as phenomena in their own right.New Directions in Sociological Theory is the result of a course of lectures given by the authors at Goldsmiths' College, University of London. Part I is an analysis of traditional sociology, including such topics as "Sociology and the Social World," "Varieties of Positivism," "Functionalism and Systems Theory," and "Theory, Methodology, and Conceptualization," Part II discusses phenomenological alternatives, including "Phenomenological Philosophy and Sociology," "Some Neglected Questions about Social Reality," "Methodology and Meaning," and "On Harold Garfinkel's Ethnomethodology," a study of one of the most important ethnomethodologists of today.

This book exemplifies the nurturing spirit of inter-discursive debate with a view to opening up new theoretical and empirical insights, understanding, and engagement, with debates on issues relating to pedagogy, policy, equity and embodiment. From a variety of social science perspectives, an international force of contributors apply a multitude of concepts to research agendas which illustrate the multiple ways in which ‘the body’ both impacts culture and is simultaneously and seamlessly positioned and shaped by it, maintaining social reproduction of class and cultural hierarchies and social regulation and control. They attest that once we begin to trace the flow of knowledge and discourses across continents, countries, regions and communities by registering their re-contextualisation, both within various popular pedagogies (e.g., newspapers, film, TV, web pages, IT) and the formal and informal practices of schools, families and peers, we are compelled to appreciate the bewildering complexity of subjectivity and the ways in which it is embodied. Indeed, the chapters suggest that no matter how hegemonic or ubiquitous discursive practices may be, they inevitably tend to generate both intended and unexpected ‘affects’ and ‘effects’: people and populations cannot easily be ‘determined’, suppressed or controlled. This book was originally published as a special issue of Sport, Education and Society.
