The aim of this book is twofold: Firstly to focus on the development of new instruments and topics in the financial industry. Secondly to analyze the development of “old” themes applied to different international contexts, such as cross-border banking and the role of government financial resources in China. With these goals in mind, the book explores the investigation of new instruments for the financing of SMEs and new ventures, such as mini bonds and equity crowdfunding. Additionally, it covers the field of corporate governance and corporate social responsibility including financial inclusion, gender roles, disclosure, social media roles and litigation. The book also investigates the choices followed by the Royal Swedish Academy in the selection of Nobel laureates in economics science to analyze their influence on the financial industry. Geared to banking academics, researchers and students, this book uncovers the most prominent issues within the banking industry today.

Access to financial services is recognised across the world as a powerful contributor to economic growth and poverty alleviation in developing countries. This is a collection of case studies of innovation in Africa's financial markets, presenting vivid testimony from across the continent of how profit-seeking organisations are experimenting with new products and models of distribution in their quest for new markets at the bottom of the financial pyramid. Written from the perspective of service providers, this book explores the factors that make financial sector innovation succeed in often very challenging circumstances. It shows that on the continent with the worst levels of financial access in the world, there is plenty to celebrate.

The financial crisis that began in 2007 triggered a break with banking practices of the past. Even as the crisis occurred, a broader set of economic, geopolitical, and technological forces were already reshaping the financial industry's transition from the twentieth to the twenty-first century. While these changes in the financial and global climate have led to a major overhaul of banking regulations and increased scrutiny of banks, they have also revealed opportunities for the development of a banking sector fit for the future. A New Era in Banking: The Landscape After the Battle identifies the main drivers of change at the heart of this wholesale transformation of the financial services industry. It examines the complex challenge for financial institutions to de-risk business models, reconnect with customers, and approach stakeholder value creation. Untangling the severe mutations that have taken place in the banking sector, A New Era in Banking, contextualizes these changes within larger trends that extend beyond the confines of the financial crisis. Banks are more vulnerable than ever to the crosscurrents of economic, demographic, regulatory, and technological change. However, by discussing how banks can operate as flexible, technology-enabled information businesses, A New Era in Banking advocates financial practices based not only on survival, but innovation.

This book describes the evolution of the supervisory model of financial institutions of the Banco Central do Brasil (BCB), from the 1990's structure focused on auditing the balance sheet of banks to the development of a macro and micro prudential supervision model with intensive use of microdata and technology solutions. The authors have carried out long research that involved not only the reading of several reports and publications, but almost 70 interviews. BCB governors, supervisory deputy-governors, representatives of the financial market, and colleagues who occupied different positions in all departments of supervision throughout this period have kindly shared their memories and experiences with them. The testimonies of the interviewees along the whole text allow the reader to share the joys, anxieties, uncertainties and hopes experienced by them in each challenge faced and goal achieved. The narrative provides an easy, exciting and accessible reading experience for all, which invites the reader to extrapolate the metaphor of the supervisory environment, to apply its message in diverse spheres of his/her professional and personal life.

"The authors (1) present new indicators of banking sector penetration across 99 countries based on a survey of bank regulatory authorities, (2) show that these indicators predict household and firm use of banking services, (3) explore the association between the outreach indicators and measures of financial, institutional, and infrastructure development across countries, and (4) relate these banking outreach indicators to measures of firms' financing constraints. In particular, they find that greater outreach is correlated with standard measures of financial development, as well as with economic activity. Controlling for these factors, the authors find that better communication and transport infrastructure and better governance are also associated with greater outreach. Government ownership of financial institutions translates into lower access, while more concentrated banking systems are associated with greater outreach. Finally, firms in countries with higher branch and ATM penetration and higher use of loan services report lower financing obstacles, thus linking banking sector outreach to the alleviation of firms' financing constraints.
