A DISCIPLE IN THE GARDEN of Gethsemane cuts off the ear of the high priest's servant according to all four Gospels. But only John tells us the servant's name, and that it was Peter who wielded the sword. And only Luke tells us that Jesus healed the wound. This book allows you to see all of this at a glance.THE FOUR GOSPELS are presented here in parallel columns, in roughly chronological order, with corresponding passages side by side. Among the differences that set this work apart from others are its use of the World English Bible, its copyright-free status, and its readable arrangement of the text.THE WORLD ENGLISH BIBLE, which provides the Gospel texts used in this book, is a copyright-free modern English translation.Editor DAVID A. REED served for a decade as a contributing editor of Dr. Walter Martin's Christian Research Journal and has taught at Spurgeon's annual School of Theology at London's Metropolitan Tabernacle. He has authored twenty books on Bible topics. Reed is pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

The four Gospels (Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John) in the Bible's New Testament cover the stories of Jesus' life, however, they are known to contain variations of those stories. Some variations are simply alternative words or rephrased sentences that retain the thought and meaning of the text between Gospels. Other variations, however, have the appearance of introducing changes to the subject content of those shared stories. This book groups verses from the four Gospels according to story sections and arranges them in a side-by-side format. This layout allows the reader to compare and contrast the differently worded story versions as written by the authors of the four Gospels. The grouped stories are ordered to follow the general timeline of Jesus' life: birth, teaching, death, and resurrection. The Gospels of Mark, Matthew, and Luke on several occasions share identical, or nearly identical, segments of story text. The similarly worded text between the first three Gospels is referred to as being synoptic or "together seeing" because the Gospel authors seemingly either borrowed text from one another or had access to common original witness writings. This book identifies the instances of synoptic text sharing. The biblical content of this book is a modern day translation of the American Standard Version (ASV) Bible. Archaic words, spellings, and sentence phrasings have been translated to more closely match the modern English language characteristics and sentence structure used today.

This is an introductory guide to the four New Testament Gospels as overlapping accounts of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, each with their own distinctive emphases and concerns. Part One deals first with the fact that there are four Gospels in the canon and looks at how the fourfold Gospel emerged. The literary relationships between the Gospels are dealt with next, followed by the composition of the Gospels. Part Two looks at each Gospel, its structure, contents, style and narrative technique, its presentation of Jesus and its particular interests and themes. Part Three, the main section of the book, takes six key events in the life of Jesus, most of which are found in all four Gospels, and examines the parallel versions. The book ends with reflections on the fourfold Gospel and the singular Jesus, including a discussion of key issues relating to the 'historical Jesus'.

Scripture commentator George Martin leaves no stone uncovered in his fascinating exploration of the Gospel of Mark. His verse-by-verse explanations are easy to understand and always begin and end with the premise that God has something to say to his people through his word. The book features interesting details relating to the history, geography, and culture of Palestine, along with definitions of the root meaning of words used by Mark and references to parallel passages in the Old and New Testaments. Reflection questions provide plenty of opportunity for going deeper with God in prayer. This commentary is sound and well-researched, but not overly academic, so it allows readers to study the Scriptures and pray through them at the same time. (Formerly published as The Gospel According to Mark: Meaning and Message.)
