How can the EU be made legitimate and sustainable through (constitutional) law - and what is the role of constitutional lawyers and their ideas in creating this "sense of legitimacy"? This book seeks to answer these questions through the concept of the "constitutional imaginary": sets of ideas and beliefs that motivate and justify the practice of government and collective self-rule. Constitutional imaginaries are as important as institutions and office- holders, as they provide political action with an overarching sense and purpose recognized as legitimate by those governed. Constitutional imaginaries are 'necessary fictions' that make political rule possible, and at the same time they are ideologies which hide from view various forms of domination. European Constitutional Imaginaries deals with a variety of questions and is split into four parts to address: the first part explores in more detail various meanings of European constitutional imaginary, as seen by different disciplines: legal sociology, political and constitutional theory, and philosophy. The second part revisits the contribution of some key authors to the creation of European constitutional imaginaries, and the third part offers various new ways of thinking about European constitutionalism. How to study the contemporary dynamics between the religious, the nonreligious and the secular in a globalizing world? Obviously, their relationship is not an empirical datum, liable to the procedures of verification or of logical deduction. We are in need of alternative conceptual and methodological tools. This volume argues that the concept of ‘social imaginary’ as it is used by Charles Taylor, is of utmost importance as a methodological tool to understand these dynamics. The first section is dedicated to the conceptual clarification of Taylor's notion of social imaginaries both through a historical study of their genealogy and through conceptual analysis. In the second section, we clarify the relation of ‘social imaginaries’ to the concept of (religious) worldviewing, understood as a process of truth seeking. Furthermore, we discuss the practical usefulness of the concept of social imaginaries for cultural scientists, by focusing on the concept of human rights as a secular social imaginary. In the third and final section, we relate Taylor's view on the role of social imaginaries and the new paths it opens up for religious studies to other analyses of the secular-religious divide, as they nowadays mainly come to the fore in the debates on what is coined as the ‘post-secular.’

TechKnowledgies: New Imaginaries and Transmigrations in the Humanities, Arts, and TechnoSciences is a diverse collection of essays, a recently produced technology play by William Kennedy, art, and installations that represent, and at times resist, the ways science and technology are interacting with the arts and the humanities to produce new imaginaries and disciplinary transmigrations that gesture towards a “university” of tomorrow. As theorists’ posit new futures and call for an end to historically grounded, or discipline-based, so-called silo approaches to knowledges, a de facto reorganization of disciplinary boundaries and a migratory spirit have spontaneously infused the humanities with new life. These transmigrations, instead of diffusing the disciplinary terrain, have strengthened and broadened existing fields. They are provoking re-mappings of intellectual topography, and, ironically, have brought about more rather than less integration. Activated by such massive cultural shifts as the turn from print to visual culture; the technological revolution and its virtual sublimes; the acceleration of scientific advances; the rise and incorporation of mass or popular culture and the possibilities of replication, the humanities are producing integrated knowledges, what we are calling new TechKnowledgies, that interface the humanities, the arts, the social and hard sciences with digital technologies and research emerging at the borders of all these fields.
