Most students of the Restoration know quite a bit about Alexander Campbell. Barton W. Stone is usually known for preaching in an 1801 revival at Cane Ridge (most don't know about the Pentecostal-ish goings on there), and later for joining forces with Alexander Campbell. These are probably the only two things most people know about him (if they even know those). This book seeks to correct that-and not necessarily just put-ting Barton W. Stone back into his place in Restoration Movement history, but also his whole movement, which included more men than just him. The "New Light" Christians never referred to themselves by that name, but the author of this book uses it as a convenient way to distinguish them from other localized groups who also called themselves "Christians" or the "Christian Church" (specifically, James O'Kelly's "Christian Church" in the south, and Abner Jones and Elias Smith's "Christian Church" or "Christian Connexion" in New England). So don't let his use of the name cloud your view of the information. The author was connected with the Disciples of Christ, the most liberal branch of the Restoration Movement, but this fact does not come across in the following pages. All footnotes are original to this work, except for ones marked "Editor," which have been added for this updated edition. We hope you find this work interesting and beneficial to your understanding of Restoration Movement history.

This radical new interpretation reveals many connections between Luke and Johannine traditions. Comparision of pericopae shared by Luke and John suggests that the usual assumptions of Lukan priority may be mistaken; instead his may be chronologically the fourth gospel. Luke neverthless treats his sources in different ways, his response being both critical and creative. He aims to give security to Christians by including as much as possible and reconciling conflicting traditions, while firmly excluding heretical misinterpretation. Shellard also includes a consideration of Luke's use of possible sources, both canonical and extra-canonical, and places Luke-Acts in its literary context, noting among other things the presentation of Rome as a facilitatator of evangelization and a promoter of co-existence. Critical studies of the two 'test cases' for James D.G. Dunn's 'New Perspective on Paul, ' Paul's Damascus experience and Gal 3:10-14, reaffirm the Reformation interpretation of Paul's doctrine of justification and confirm that Paul obtained that doctrine from his Damascus experience. The discovery that Isaiah 42 influenced Paul's interpretation of his apostolic call helps explain how Paul developed his antithesis between the Spirit and the flesh/law and why he insists on the impossibility of justification by works of the law. Contrary to the assumption of the 'New Perspective School', Seyoon Kim's studies issue a call to take Paul seriously as an important witness to his contemporary Judaism. The distinctive Pauline doctrine of Christ as the Image of God and as the Last Adam is revisited in the light of the growing interest in the apocalyptic-mystical background of Paul. The author also explicates how Paul uses the Jesus tradition in the light of the Damascus experience to develop his christology and soteriology. So, while reaffirming the significance of the Damascus event, Seyoon Kim now appreciates the Jesus tradition as equally important for the origin of Paul's gospel.
