Excerpt from New Mexico Historical Review, 1946, Vol. 21 For approximately a century the Navaho have been struggling for possession of their traditional homeland against the intruding white man. Their biggest victory came when they were allowed to'return to northwestern New Mexico and adjacent Arizona in 1868 from their im prisonment near Fort Sumner, in the Pecos valley. A minor, but important triumph, was won in the 1880's when they regained ownership of a strip of land on the south side of the San Juan river near Farmington and Bloomfield. Excerpt from New Mexico Historical Review, Vol. 25: January, 1950 Though it is doubtful that the Mescalero paid much at tention to the dissensions of a political nature among those who had settled on their lands, still such happenings were to affect them profoundly in the future. In 1835 Texas de clared itself a republic but was not recognized as such by Mexico.16 During the next few years the Texas Rangers equipped themselves with Colt revolving pistols,17 the Six Shooters which figure largely from that time on in Mescalero as well as American accounts of wars and feuds. Excerpt from The New Mexico Historical Review, 1927, Vol. 2 Those of our New Mexico boys who return from the front many will not have endured what is impossible to describe adequately to those who had not the privilege of seeing them there the danger of the submarine and that of the ever present German aeroplane, the terrors of the awful gas and the discomfort of being wet and chilled through, week after week, and more than once advancing through dark forests with a rain of machine gun bullets pattering around them. While viewing the daily aerial combats and when looking up at some allied plane hover ing above us for our protection, we could not help wonder ing if among those aviators there might not be a New Mex ico boy. Without doubt many a time there was one of them hovering 15000 feet up, helping protect, among others, boys from his own state. Let us never forget those of them who lie buried in France. Let us never cease to honor those who return. I shall never forget the one or cease to honor the other, for I have seen them at their work. Trails Of Historic New Mexico written by Hunt Janin and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-21 with History categories.

This is a survey of the major historic trails of New Mexico and other parts of the American Southwest. These trails were used by Indians, prospectors, soldiers, buffalo hunters, immigrants, and cattle and sheep drovers, and, unlike other, more famous Western trails, were used as a network of two-way trade routes instead of one-way avenues for westward migration. Introductory chapters highlight prehistoric Indian trails, Spanish exploration, and Pecos as a microcosm of the old Southwest. Each subsequent chapter covers an individual trail, describing its history and some of the people who used it. A chronology of New Mexico's history and trail system is included, as are maps of the most important trails.
