This book brings together all the surviving photographs--126 of the original 150--from the remarkable series entitled "La Nouvelle Orleans et ses environs, taken of New Orleans in 1867 by the city's most important photographer, Theodore Lilienthal. Representing the first municipally sponsored photographic survey of any american city, and only recently rediscovered, the photographs--of every aspect of the city, from urban palaces and stately mansions to factories and asylums--were exhibited at the Paris World Exposition in 1867, before being formally presented to Napoleon III, Emperor of France from 1852 to 1871. This book places the photographs in the context of contemporary photographic practice, nineteenth-century city building and urban iconography, and of the need for reconstruction and economic renewal in the South following the devastation of the American Civil War. lavishly produced and engagingly written, it will appeal to anyone interested in the history of the United States, the history of photography and the development of the modern city.

"A haunting tapestry of interwoven stories that inform us not just about our past but about the resentment-bred demons that are all too present in our society today . . . The interconnected strands of race and history give Ball’s entrancing stories a Faulknerian resonance." —Walter Isaacson, The New York Times Book Review A 2020 NPR staff pick | One of The New York Times' thirteen books to watch for in August | One of The Washington Post's ten books to read in August | A Literary Hub best book of the summer| One of Kirkus Reviews' sixteen best books to read in August The life and times of a militant white supremacist, written by one of his offspring, National Book Award–winner Edward Ball Life of a Klansman tells the story of a warrior in the Ku Klux Klan, a carpenter in Louisiana who took up the cause of fanatical racism during the years after the Civil War. Edward Ball, a descendant of the Klansman, paints a portrait of his family’s anti-black militant that is part history, part memoir rich in personal detail. Sifting through family lore about “our Klansman” as well as public and private records, Ball reconstructs the story of his great-great grandfather, Constant Lecorgne. A white French Creole, father of five, and working class ship carpenter, Lecorgne had a career in white terror of notable and bloody completeness: massacres, night riding, masked marches, street rampages—all part of a tireless effort that he and other Klansmen made to restore white power when it was threatened by the emancipation of four million enslaved African Americans. To offer a non-white view of the Ku-klux, Ball seeks out descendants of African Americans who were once victimized by “our Klansman” and his comrades, and shares their stories. For whites, to have a Klansman in the family tree is no rare thing: Demographic estimates suggest that fifty percent of whites in the United States have at least one ancestor who belonged to the Ku Klux Klan at some point in its history. That is, one-half of white Americans could write a Klan family memoir, if they wished. In an era when racist ideology and violence are again loose in the public square, Life of a Klansman offers a personal origin story of white supremacy. Ball’s family memoir traces the vines that have grown from militant roots in the Old South into the bitter fruit of the present, when whiteness is again a cause that can veer into hate and domestic terror.

From the Haitian-style “shotgun” houses of the 19th century to the lavish high-rises of the 21st century, a walk through the streets of America’s neighborhoods that reveals the rich history—and future—of urban housing The Philadelphia row house. The New York tenement. The Boston triple-decker. Every American city has its own iconic housing style, structures that have been home to generations of families and are symbols of identity and pride. Max Podemski, an urban planner for the city of Los Angeles and lifelong architecture buff, has spent his career in and around these buildings. Deftly combining his years of experience with extensive research, Podemski walks the reader through the history of our dwelling spaces—and offers a blueprint for how time-tested urban planning models can help us build the homes the United States so desperately needs. In A Paradise of Small Houses, Podemski charts how these dwellings have evolved over the centuries according to the geography, climate, population, and culture of each city. He introduces the reader to styles like Chicago’s prefabricated workers cottages and LA’s car-friendly dingbats, illuminating the human stories behind each city’s iconic housing type. Through it all, Podemski interrogates the American values that have equated home ownership with success and led to the US housing crisis, asking, “How can we look to the past to build the homes, neighborhoods, and cities of the future that our communities deserve?”

New Orleans written by Albert Fossier M. a. and has been published by Firebird Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-05 with History categories.

The most interesting period in the history of New Orleans is that included in the first four decades of the nineteenth century. During these years, the city emerged from the status of a small town which, for nearly a century, had been neglected by both France and Spain. Subjected to the whims of foreign masters, a pawn of the politics of a war-torn Europe, New Orleans before the Purchase although the capital of a vast empire, was never much more than a village. But when it became a part of the United States, New Orleans soon grew into a metropolis that attracted the attention not only of the Nation, but of the world. Recalling "Political Squabbles," "The Cholera Epidemic of 1832," and "Amusements-Refined and Vulgar," the author's detailed accounts are complemented by a chronological table and lists of both the governors of Louisiana and the mayors of New Orleans. New Orleans: The Glamour Period, 1800-1840 presents the Crescent City in an accurate, archival light as it places it in the more genteel time preceding the Civil War.Recalling "Political Squabbles," "The Cholera Epidemic of 1832," and "Amusements-Refined and Vulgar," the author's detailed accounts are complemented by a chronological table and lists of both the governors of Louisiana and the mayors of New Orleans.
