This book is a collection of papers which reflect the recent trends in the philosophy and history of molecular biology. It brings together historians, philosophers, and molecular biologists who reflect on the discipline's emergence in the 1950's, its explosive growth, and the directions in which it is going. Questions addressed include: (i) what are the limits of molecular biology? (ii) What is the relation of molecular biology to older subdisciplines of biology, especially biochemistry? (iii) Are there theories in molecular biology? (iv) If so, how are these theories structured? (v) What role did information theory play in the rise of molecular biology? The book will open the way for many future researchers.

A core text for those studying A Level Biology. Divided into five main parts, the book encompasses topics from basic cell biology to the impact of Man. The author has focused on the logical development of key ideas, by beginning each chapter with material which the student should already be familiar and building up gradually to the more difficult concepts. Each chapter begins with a Learning Objectives box outlining the main topic areas to be covered and finishes with questions of increasing difficulty, designed to test the student's understanding of the topic. Additional Information Boxes expand on ideas covered within the main text, while the Clear Thinking Boxes attempt to address common misapprehensions in biology.

New Perspectives On Neo Kantianism And The Sciences written by Helmut Pulte and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-07-05 with Philosophy categories.

This volume considers the exchange between the Neo-Kantian tradition in German philosophy and the sciences from the last third of the nineteenth century to the Great war and partly beyond. During this period, various scientific disciplines underwent modernisation processes characterised by an increasing empirical inclination and a decline in the influence of metaphysics, the pluralisation of theories, and the historical and pragmatic revitalisation of scientific claims against philosophy. The various contributions look at the ways in which a certain ‘Kantian orthodoxy’ was influenced by these new developments and whether (and how) itself had some impact on the development of the sciences. The volume is not limited to the 'exact sciences' of mathematics and physics, which are particularly important for the Kantian tradition, but also takes into account less recognised disciplines such as biology, chemistry, technology and psychology. It is complemented by contributions that contrast Neo-Kantianism with other 'scientific philosophies' of the period in question.

New Perspectives On The History Of The Twentieth Century American High School written by Kyle P. Steele and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-07 with Education categories.

The growth of the American high school that occurred in the twentieth century is among the most remarkable educational, social, and cultural phenomena of the twentieth century. The history of education, however, has often reduced the institution to its educational function alone, thus missing its significantly broader importance. As a corrective, this collection of essays serves four ends: as an introduction to the history of the high school; as a reevaluation of the power of narratives that privilege the perspective of school leaders and the curriculum; as a glimpse into the worlds created by students and their communities; and, most critically, as a means of sparking conversations about where we might look next for stories worth telling.
