This is a social history study of the Nigerian Civil War (`Biafran War', 1967 - 70) and post-war reconstruction after 1970, written as a `history from below'. It records experiences and perceptions of people from within the former war-affected area who - unlike a number of famous politicians and generals - normally do not publish autobiographies. Topics covered are: everyday life under war conditions and the experiences of vulnerable groups, like refugees and women; the experience of military violence and the perception of politics by `ordinary' people; the experience of the end of the war, traumatic in many cases; and the problems people faced in the reconstruction process after 1970. The study also looks at the ways the war experience is viewed and interpreted in South-Eastern Nigeria today. Thereby, it also contributes to the understanding of current politics in Nigeria, particularly from the perspective of the former war-affected area. Axel Harneit-Sievers is Research Fellow of the Centre for Modern Oriental Studies in Berlin. Jones O. Ahazuem is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. This book is about the thrust of political development in Nigeria through the final phase of British colonial rule to present day. Its theme is the political convergence of three social forces, namely the thrust of Nigerian nationalism, the persistence of ethnic or cultural particularism, and the crystallization of emergent class interests. It exposes the shenanigans that compromised Nigeria's political wellbeing and advancement, while pointing the way forward. The author highlights the impact of the January 15, 1966 coup d'etat and how its leader, Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu was subsequently murdered in the Nsukka war-front through a brotherly conspiracy of the meanest order. The roles played by Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe and Chief Obafemi Awolowo in the Nigeria-Biafra war are examined from new perspectives. The supposed motives in using hunger as an instrument of war; and the de-populating of Igboland and committing genocide against the Igbo are succinctly re-assessed. About the Author Uchenna Nwankwo was born in Ilorin in Northern Nigeria, grew up in Eastern Nigeria, in the present Southeast zone, and now lives in Onitsha, Southeast Nigeria. The Politics of Biafra and Future of Nigeria is a reflection on the importance of history in addressing present realities and the future of coexistance of Nigeria’s multi ethnic society. It analyses the ideological struggles and conflict in Biafra during the war with Nigeria from 1967-1970, the impact of the war and the relevance of those struggles to the current agitations for a new state of Biafra. In this historical and analytical work, the author observes that nearly fifty years after the end of the Nigerian-Biafra war in 1970, Nigeria is still grappling with the Biafran dilemma. No matter its pretensions, Nigeria will at some point have to reform its present pseudo federal arrangement to create a more inclusive, equitable and proper federal structure. If not, the country will continue to face epileptic developmental thrusts, militancy in the Niger Delta and a ruinous intensifying clamour for self-determination by disadvantaged ethnic groups, especially the Igbo. The author argues that in the world, in the era of technology inspired globalisation, it is impossible to hold an unwilling people hostage in any country without negative consequences. He makes a case for a new order in Nigeria, expressing the view that Nigeria is caught in a vicious circle of graft and instability and nothing will change until Nigeria finds the proper foundational matrix to galvanise the talents and resources of the people and create a productive economy.

In 1966, several waves of rioting in northern Nigeria culminated in the brutal massacre of thousands of easterners by their northern Nigerian counterparts. Sensing that their safety could no longer be guaranteed, the easterners fled to the eastern region and established an independent nation called Biafra. Refusing to accept her sovereignty, Nigeria waged a thirty-month war against Biafra, targeting air assaults at civilian locations, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of children, women, and the elderly. Nigeria used land and sea blockade to prevent relief food from reaching hungry masses in Biafra and thousands of children died from a form of malnutrition called kwashiorkor. At the end of it all in 1970, two million people had perished.
